Ordinance 252r ORDINANCE N0, AN ORDINANCE REGULATING THE SPEED AND OXRRATION OF AUTOMOBILE AND MOTOR VEHICLES IN THE CITY OF GILROY. The Mayor and Common Council of the City of Gilroy do ordain as follows: -- Section 1 No person, firm or corporation shall line, run, drive or operate, or casue to be used, run, driven or operated any auto- mobile, locomobi le, motorcycle, or motor vehicle of any kind moved, operated, or propelled by steam, electricity, gasoline, or ^ny gaseous fluid upon or along any street, alley, avenue or public way, in the business section of the City of Gilroy, at a greater rate of speed than ten miles per hour, or elsewhere in said City at a greater ratio of 'peed than fifteen miles per hour, or at or on any street crossing or intersection at a greater rate of speed than ten miles per hour, or at any alley while crossing any sidewalk thereon,oT crossing any sidewalk at any .place at a greater rate of speed than five miles per hour. Section 2, The business section of the City of Gilroy as defined for the purpose of this ordinances shall consist of that portion of said City which lies South of the center line of Third Street, East of Eigleberry Street, North of Eighth Street, and ?Pest of the Southern Pacific Railroad tracks. Section 3. Every person using, operating, driving or running, or causing to be used, operated, driven or run in the night time, between, one hour after sunset and one hour before .spnrise, in f 2 S _L_ said City of Gilroy, any vehicle mentions in Section 1, shall have attached thereto or connected therewith, and in front thereof, a headlight or two lamps, and in the rear-thereof a lamp or lantern showing a red light, which shall be lighted. at all times while said vehicle is on any street, avenue or alley of said City. section 4. All vehicles mentioned in Section 1 hereof shall have attached thereto or connected, therewith a whistle, horn or gong, which shall be sovtnded when turning into any cross street, or alley, and -hen corning out of prrf alley into a 6treet or thorough - fare, and also on or before crossing arzr sidewalk, All vehicles mentioned in said Section:. _,l shall also have and use at all times, R muffler or other suitable contrivance to suppress or miniiiiize the sound made by the engine in the operation of such vehicle, and the use of any cutout whereby the exhaust is disconnected from such muffler or other contrivance to suppress the sound is hereby forbidden. Section 5. No person under the age of sixteen years shall run or drive, or be allowed to run or drive any automobile or loeomobile in the City of Gilroy. Section 6. Every vehicle moitioned in Section 1 shall head and turn rrith the traffic, turning square corners at all times. In turning to the right into a street it must keep close to the right hand c,.zrb, and every such vehicle turning to the right shall have the right of way over all vehicles traveling in the direction to which said vehicle is turning, in tiLrning to C the left into another street it must keep to the right of She center line of `he intersection of such streets and such vehicle shall give the right of way to all vehicles traveling in the direction to which said vehicle is turning. Every such ` vehicle must be on the right hand side of the street at all times, and when standing he within three feet of the curb and facing the right. Such vehicles must not stop or stand on any street crossing or within fifteen feet of the intersection of any street or alley or within fifteen feet of any fire hydrant. Section 7, Every vehicle mentioned in Section 1 overtaking and passing another vehicle going in the same direction shall turn to the left, and the vehicle so overtaken upon being signalled or re- quested so to do shall give way to the right. The driver of airy eueh vehicle wishing to stop or charge gis course shall before doing so signify his int -Intion to do so to those in the rear by a plain, visible or audible signal. Section 8. Any person violating or wilfully non-complying with any of the provisions of this ordinance shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and shall, upon conviction thereof, be punished by a fine not exceeding One hundred Dollars, or by imprisonment in the City Prison not exceeding thirty days, or by both such fine a*M— imprisonment. Section 9. All ordinances or parts; of ordinances in conflict with any of the provisions of this ordinance are hereby repealed.
