Resolution 1745 RESOLUTION NO. 1745 RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY OPPOSING THE PROPOSED ASSEMBLY REDISTRICTING OF SANTA CLARA COUNTY. WHEREAS, the Assembly of the State of California has approved a compromise assembly district reapportionment plan which provides that Santa Clara County would be represented by seven, rather than three, assemblymen; and WHEREAS, of the proposed new districts, the 29th would cover much of San Luis Obispo and San Benito Counties, the 31st would principally represent Santa Cruz County, the 34th would be oriented toward Monterey County, and the l3th would extend as far northerly as Walnut Creek; and WHEREAS, the effect of the proposed redistricting would be to fragment and dilute unreasonably the voting power of the population of Santa Clara County, a population that has in common substantial and distinct social, environmental and economic interests resulting from geographical circumstances that cannot be altered by the State Legislature. RESOLVED, the Council of the City of Gilroy, while recognizing that legisla- tive apportionment involves statewide balancing of many elements, urgently requests that the Senate of the State of California disapprove the proposed assembly re- apportionment and approve only such reapportionment plan as will provide for reason- able territorial integrity of districts, and which will help achieve the goal of effective representation of the populations of the various regions of the State. Duly and regularly adopted by the following unanimous vote of the Council of the City of Gilroy at its regular meeting held on the 4th day of June, 1973.
