RESOLUTION NO. 997
A RESOLUTlmJ OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY
EXPRESS ING SUPPORT AND DEVOTIOn TO THE NENBERS OF THE
ARNED FORCES OF THIS COUNTRY FIGHTli.JG It,! VIET NAN.
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY DOES HEREBY RESOLVE, THAT
WHEREAS, young men of the City of Gilroy, California, are engaged in
morta 1 combat in Viet ilam in support of the Forei gh Poli cy commi tments of thi s
Nation; and
~MEREAS, certain misquided groups and individuals in our society have, by
various demonstrations and otherwise, have either knowingly or ignorantly sought
to undermine our National Policy; and
WHEREAS, these actions have been given such vast publicity in the press,
on radio and television, that many people, including those of hostile nations,
have been erroneously led to believe that the majority of our people are not
willing to support our commitments or uphold our national honor; and
WHEREAS, members of our anmed forces, themselves convinced of the recti-
tude of our Asian policy. have expressed concern and shock over the apparent
attitude of those for whom they are fighting, and are desirous and deserving of
a forthright statement of our support for an interest in them.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that this Council, as the duly elected
representatives of the people of Gilroy, deplores the fact that the publicity
given to the opinions of such a small minority of our people has tended to mislead
the world into considering this country as deeply divided; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Council hereby extends to the members
of the armed forces its fullest support and warmest devotion to them as they
perform their hard duty, thus assuring them that the spirit of patriotism is not
dead in this country and that they are neither forgotten nor unappreciated by us;
and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that copies of this resolution be sent to the
President of the United States, to the United States Senators from this State
and to Congressmen from this district for their information and edification, and
to the several communications media for widespread dissmenination to the public
at large, and that further copies be sent to the legislative bodies of the

cities of this State with the expressed hope and request that they will see fit
to adopt similar resolutions.
