This regular adjourned meeting of the Common Council is called
to order by His Honor Mayor S.D.Heck.
Present: Counc ilmen: Ge orge C.Milias, Jr. ,James Battersby, George A.
Martin,George M.Mason,Nat Heiner. Absent: Councilman: Jack Rogers.
Mr.Fred flalters,representing the Seagrave Corporation,fJ.ppears
before the Council and presents a detailed cost estimate for
placing the cityts pumping engine in first class condition. The
cost of modernizing the pumper is estimated at $l,652.00;the cost
of overhauling the motor estimated from $300.00 to $500.00.
Mayor Heck announces a meeting for taxpayers and other interested
persons to discuss the purchase of a new fire truck, Tuesday evening,
September 19th at the City Hall and states that the tax rate for
1939-40 will be set at this meeting.
Mot ion by CounCIlman 1/Iilias, seconded by Counc ilman Mas on and
carried unanimously that Councilman Battersy be granted thirty
days leave of absence fro m the state.
Motion by Councilman Heiner,seconded by Councilman 1mrtin and
carried unanimously that ~rr.Ed.Piedmont,who holds the garbage
contract,be allowed ~~25.00 per month for maintenance of the garbage
dump at the Sewer Farm.
Application for a liquor license for the Corner Market,corner of
Fourth and TJonterey Streets,is presented. No objection is made.
Two encroachment permits for the Coast Counties Gas and E~ctric
Company,one to place a 2" pipe under First Street approximately
540 feet West of Hanna ""street and one to erect poles on North
Monterey street between the City Limits and Leavesley Road,are
presented.
Motion by Councilman Martin,seoonded by Councilman Mason and
carried unanimously that the Coast Counties Gas and Electric
Company be granted a revocable permit to place a 2 inch pipe under
First Street at a point approximately 540 f~et West of Hanna street.

Mayor Heck announces that the encorachmentpermi t of the Coast
Counties Gas and Electric Company to erect poles within the City
Limits ,between the North City Limits and Leavesley Road,will be
inv~stigated.
Mr.George C.Renz appears before the Council with a request from
the California Finance Company,San Jose,to make certain changes
to the front part of a building owned by them at 152 North Monterey
Street and to cut lO feet ofcilrbing in.. front of this property.No
action is taken.
Councilman Heiner announces that ,September is the month usually
designated for the annual Firemen's banquet. It is decided to
let the Fire Department members set the date for thEL,banquet.
A request from N~.M1tchel Milias to cut approximately 30 inches
of curbing in front of property owned by him at 42 South Monterey
Street,is presented.
Motion by Councilman Battersby,seconded by Councilman Heiner and
carried unanimously that ~~.Mi~chel Milias be granted a permit to
cut approximately 30 inches of curbing in front of his pro perty at
42 South Monterey street,the Clerk to issue said permit to be
signed by the Chairman of the Street Comnittee.
