Pate, Chas, Gallo, J. Hughes Kennedy, Courtland M. Rush, Kenneth L. Petersen, and Segundo Sanchez. The Mayor states that the purpose of the meeting is to open the bids for the paving of Alexander Street. The bids are opened and are as follows: Granite Construction Co.-$17,109.36, Radtke & Son-$23,351.5l, Leo F. Piazza Paving Co.-$16,777.58, Butler & Fox-$17,890.04 Motion by Councilman Pate, second by Councilman Rush and carried that the low bid of Leo F. Piazza Paving Co. for the sum of $16,777.58 be accepted and that the bonds of the unsuccessful bidder be held until the signing of the con- tract. A letter is read from Gov. Knight regarding "Safe Driving Day" and is refer- red to the Public Health and Safety Committee to make plans for cooperating with the program. Mayor Mason directs the Deputy City Clerk to open bids for a * ton pick-up truck for the Water Dept~ The bids are as follows: Byers Motor Co.-$1387.12, Culwell Chevrolet-$1350.40, G. N. Brodersen & Son-$1200.00, Bob Hollar Company- $1006.04, Jack Ronald-$1229.38, and Madonna Motors-$1540.28. Motionb,y ~ouncilman Sanchez, second by Councilman Kennedy and carried that the low bid of $1006.04 from Bob Hollar Company be accepted. Ordinance No. 531 is presented and read by the City Attorney 1651 Motion by Councilman Sanchez, second by Councilman Kennedy and carried that Ordinance No. 531 be adopted. RESOLUTION NO. 358 BE IT RESOLVED: ~.-;s That that certain lease on a month-to-month basis, dated August 1, 1955, now submitted to the Common Council of the City of Gilroy, and designated as lease No. 3267, by the State of California, office of the Adjutant - General covering a portion of the certain building commonly known as the "Wheeler Audi- torium" or "Armory", located on the south side of Sixth Street, between Church Street and Rosanna Street, in the City of Gilroy, be approved and accepted, and that the said lease be entered into by the said ~ity of Gilroy, and that the same be exe mted on behalf of the said City of Gilroy by GEORGE M. RESOLUTION NO. 359 BE IT RESOLVED: That that certain lease, dated August 1, 1955, submitted to the Common Council of the City of Gi+roy, and designated as Lease No. 3267-A, by the State of California, office of the Adjutant General, covering a portion of the premises belonging to the City of Gilroy adjoining the Wheeler Auditorium or Ar~ory, located on the south side of Sixth Street, between Church Street and Rosanna Street, and known as the Rear portion of the Gilroy City Auditorium Yard, No. 202 West Sixth Street, Gilroy, be approved and accepted, that the said lease be entered into by the said City of Gilroy, and that t he same be executed on behalf of the. -16..~ () -1 r ~)~ said City of Cilroy by GEORGE M. City Clerk A letter from the Mrs. Jeanette Johnson, Secretary of the Gilroy Gliders J requesting the use of the a uditorium free of charge for a dance to be held on Saturd~, November 12, 1955 is read. Motion by Councilman Kennedy second by Council~an Petersen and carried that the use of the auditorium on Saturday, November l2~h be granted the Gilroy Gliders. A letter from the J. L. Stuart Co. regarding the cost of erecting a canvas cover at the Gymkhana Grounds for the annual bull sale is read. The Building and Grounds Committee is directed to contact the Cattlemen's Association to obtain an agreement with them on the costs of erection of the canvas. Byron Brown, Building Inspector reports on the progress made in correcting ~ the hazards which were called to the attention of the Common Council by insurance carriers. He also reports that the George Renz Construction Company has a used compressor for sale which is in very good condition which might be purchased for a1::out $1500.00. No action is taken by the Common Council concerning the purchase of the compressor. Mr. Brown also reports that he has a request from Mr. Svend Petersen to pasture abollt fifteen calves on the Brem property. The request is placed in the hands of the City Attorney and the Bui'ding Inspector to determine whether or not the request is in violation of the Zoning Ordinance. The purchase of two new trucks for the use of the City Departments is dis- cussed. Motion by Councilman Petersen, second by Councilman Gallo and carried that the purchasing agent prepare bids for two new 2 ton dump trucks, the successful ~ bidder to accept in trade the Ford Dump truck and the dump body on the Chevrolet dump truck; the bids to be opened on October 24, 1955. Motion by Councilman Petersen, second by Councilman Pate and carried that Byron Brown, Building Inspector, be allowed $30.00 per month and gasoline for the use of his car for City business. Motion by Councilman Rush, second by Councilman Pate and carried that the date for the annual Firemen's Dinner be set for Friday, October 14th and that all l 1653 City employees pe invited to,attend. Councilman Rush, Chairman of the Finance Committee recommends that a special census be taken in GiJroy in order to take advantage of additional Gasoline Tax and In Lieu money. Motion by Councilman Petersen, second by Councilman Sanchez and carried that the necessary steps be taken for a special census of the city.
