This regular adjourned meeting of the Common Council is
called to order by His Honor George c. Milias.
Present: Councilmen Charles Gallo, Everett C. Wentworth,
Kenneth L. Petersen, Courtland M. Rush, and Carl W. Pate,
Absent: Councilman Sig Sanchez.
Councilman Sanchez now arrives during the reading of the
correspondence and takes his place at the Council table.
A communication from the California 1ighway Commission is
read explaining the revision of procedure on the location of
Freeways. A procedural resolution is also attached to letter.
This letter is ordered to be placed on file.
A letter from the Gilroy Public Schools requesting the
appointment of a committee from the Council on swimming pool
maintenance is read. Councilman Rush states that the chairmen
of the Recreation, Buildings and Grounds, and Finance Committees
should be appointed on this committee. It is decided that this
committee will be appointed on the first regular Council meet-
ing in April.
A letter is read from the International Conference of
Building Officials regarding the proposed change in the City's
Building Code. No action is taken at this time as it is decided
by all Councilmen to defer this matter until Monday, March 24,
1958, at 8:00 P.M. at which time there will be a committee
meeting consisting of the Council and the Planning Commission to
discuss the adoption of the 1958 Building Code and Fire Zoning
under this code. The City Administrator is instructed to call
all the Councilmen to remind them of this meeting on Narch 24th.
A letter from the Associated Consultants regarding the
appointments of Administrative Assistant and Director of Public
Works is read. The City Clerk states that a Committee of three
should also be present at the April 1st meeting for appointment
of the Administrative Assistant. The City Clerk is instructed
to notify Mr. Shean of Associated Consultants to advertise in
rthe Gilroy Evening Dispatch for the position of Administrative
Assistant. Interviews for the position of the Director of Pub-
lic Works will be on April 3rd at ~:OO p.m. The City Clerk is
instructed to call all the Councilmen to remind them of this
meeting. The City Clerk is also instructed to find out from Mr.
Shean if the interviews will be held for the position of Admin-
istrative Assistant on March 28th and to all the Councilmen when
a time is set. Councilman Gallo suggests that the final meetings
for appointment of these positions b~ held at night and all -
Councilmen are agreeable to this.
The Mayor now asks that bids for the police cars be read.
Tae bids are opened and read, as follows: Byers Motor Company -
For two - six cylinder cars $1910.00, two - eight cylinder cars
$2228.24, and one - six cylinder and one - eight cylinder :~2069.11~
Duff Chevrolet Company - For two - six cMlinder cars ~1998.00,
two - eight cylinder 9ars $2210.00, and one - six cylinder and
one - eight cylinder $2109.00; Madonna Motors - For two - six
cylinder $1935.36, two - eight cylinder $2093.42, one - six
cylinder and one - eight cylinder $2014.39.
Motion by Councilman Sanchez second by Councilman Pate and
carried that the low bid of Madonna Motors for two - Plymouth
8 cylinder - 4 Door Sedans for $2093.42 cash and two 1957 - 8
cylinder Ford Sedans now used by the Police Department, be accepted,
after approval by the City Attorney of the bid form. The bid
form is approved by the City Attorney and the bid of Madonna
Motors is accepted.
The Mayor now asks the City Attorney for an Ordinance adopt-

ing the 195$ Building Code. The City Attorney states that he has
an ordinance prepared but it should be held in abeyance until
after the meeting on March 24th with the representative from the
Conference of Building Officials.
The amendment to the Garbage and Rubbish Ordinance
setting new rates for collection of garbage and rubbish is now
asked for. The Attorney presents and reads Ordinance No. 568.
Motion by Councilman Wentworth second by Councilman Petersen
that Ordinance No. 56$ be adopted.

AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF GILROY AMENDING ORDINANCE NO. 42$
RELATING TO THE COLLECTION OF GARBAGE AND REFUSE IN THE CITY OF
GILROY AND REPEALING ORDINANCE NOS. 429, 504, and 525, FIXING THE
RATES TO BE CHARGED FOR COLLECTION OF GARBAGE, AND ESTABLISH-
ING NEW RATES TO BE CHARGED BY THE GARBAGE COLLECTOR.

Ordinance No. 568 will be effective on April 1, 195$.
There is now some discussion on which type of table and
chairs, the Councilmen want for the new Council room at the
Wheeler Auditorium. It is decided that the Councilmen want a -.
raised platform for the council table. The price for the raised
platform of $225.00 and the price of $465.00 for the council ~
table quoted by Nelson Construction Company is accepted.
Motion by Councilman Sanchez second by Councilman Petersen
and carried that the Building and Grounds Committee and the City
Administrator be given authority to purchase and install the
necessary table, chairs, and desks for the new City offices.
The City Administrator asks for ideas from the Councilmen
on the parking area and landsoaping on the West entrance of the
Auditorium. Councilman Petersen states that the Buildings and
Grounds Committee is planning to meet with a Landscaping-Archi-
tect and will report back to the Council on landscaping at the
West entrance of the Wheeler Auditorium and also the Miller and
Lux Park property.
Reports on water samples taken by the Santa Clara County
Health Department on February 26th and March 6th are read. These
reports are satisfactory and are ordered filed.
The City Attorney reports on the legal alternatives for
handling the controversy over the George White'building. He
states that action should be taken in Civil Court, that it will
take further time to prepare the necessary papers and that he
will report to the Council at a later date.
The City Clerk reports that the~e will be a League of Calif-
ornia Cities dinner meeting at 7:30 P.M. on March 20~ 195$ in
San Mateo. :
The City Clerk reports that the ",Air Pollution Control Board i ,
confirmed and ordered that the burning of materials as the re-
sult of the clearing of building sites must be discontinued
after April 1, 1958.
The Mayor reports that drainage from Hazel Shy's property
on the new high school road is getting to be a problem. Walter
. Hanna Sr. explains the problem. Councilman Sanchez reports that
a wider ditch can be made on the side of the roadway when the
weather clears up, and that this problem cannot be completely
abolished until the over-all County drainage system is expanded.
Motion by Councilman Sanchez second by Councilman Pate and

carried that the City Clerk be authorized to pay the full amount
of taxes due, on the Miller and Lux Park property.
Councilman Sanchez reports that the Recreation 6ommission
is going to have a meeting with the Recreation Committee to
establish the price of admission for children swimmers this sum-
mer at the new high school pool. He states that he will notify
the Councilmen when the meeting will be held.
Councilman Petersen reports that the new addition to the
Gilroy Public Library is now officially opened.
Councilman Pate reports that he has received a brochure
from the Pacific Gas & Electric Company recommending trees best
suited for parking areas and he states that he will notify the
Planning Commission and Forestry Board of this information.
Tne Cit1 Clerk is instructed to find out when the City
should spray the trees again and to get this spraying program
under way as soon as possible.
There being no further business this Council meeting is
adjourned.
