Agenda Item # 11.4 - Bruce Naegel | Received 08/01/2022CAUTION: This email originated from an External Source. From: To:City Clerk; Council Member Zachary Hilton Subject:EXTERNAL - Passing the REACH code Date:Sunday, July 31, 2022 4:59:19 PM Dear City Council Members and Mayor, Bruce Naegel is writing to express strong support for Gilroy to adopt strong all-Electric REACH codes for buildings and transportation. One of the key areas is multifamily housing. With the high price and scarcity of land, multifamily housing becomes an important part of the mix. One of the components needed in fully electric multifamily buildings is charging facilities for EV charging. We are only 8.5 years away from 2030 when we need to significantly reduce the GHG content. Some cities are pushing to be carbon neutral by 2030 or 2035. Reach codes are needed to get to these goals. Key sustainability components include: · Cleaner air, from the reduction of toxic gases like Nitrogen Oxides. These are combustion products. Driving to zero nitrogen oxides reduces GHG as well. Reducing Nitrogen Oxides has real health benefits. Homes with gas stoves have a 42% higher incidence of asthma symptoms in children. · All electric houses are less expensive to build. They have only 1 energy distribution (electricity) instead of both gas and electricity in mixed fuel residences. · An all-electric home is safer than one that has gas and electricity. Please support the REACH codes and help address climate change. We are seeing the effects of Climate Change creating severe weather events. The Portland Oregon region endured 115 degree weather last year. Weather forecasts indicate we will have that level of temperature this week. We can see what is happening now. How much worse will it be for those who will inherit the Earth aver we leave.
