Dear Gilroy City Council -
As you consider making a statement on the Sargent Quarry Project, I encourage you to think about what kind of
model you'd like to be for current residents of Gilroy, and what you'd like to bequeath to its future residents.
On one hand, it could be respect for the landscape, its diverse ecology, critical ecosystems and species, and habitat
connectivity that will help them survive and perhaps even thrive into the future. It could be long-overdue respect and
support for the First People of this land, the Amah Mutsun, who have been tending this landscape and doing sacred
ceremony here for thousands of years. It could be acknowledgement that water is life for us all, and that protecting it
against pollution, privatization and overuse is of paramount importance. All of which benefit the entire community.
Or, you could demonstrate that it's ok to create yet another ugly, irreparable scar on the landscape, destroying habitat
and critical connectivity. That it's ok to continue polluting our rivers, and depleting our already-imperiled water
supply. And that it's ok to ignore thousands of years of religious use, and continue to oppress the original people of
this land. All for the private profit of very few.
Only 15-20 full-time jobs would be created by this quarry. And we need to move away from the delusion of endless
growth - we do not need more sand to build more sprawl. We need to change every decision we make to live more
sustainably and respectfully on this planet. We should know and do better by now, to set a good example for the
present, help heal the past, and leave our descendents a healthy, beautiful, just future.
Please vote to oppose the Sargent Quarry project. Thank you.
