Mayor Marie Blankley's Annual Report to the Library Commission – Mayor Blankley is midway through her tour of attending a meeting of each of the nine city commissions. She thanked the commissioners for their time and willingness to serve. City Administrator Jimmy Forbis was also present and mentioned that the Library has access to $5 million in library bond funds to make upgrades to the building. LIBRARY REPORTS A. County Library Report for July - September 2022 (report attached) Steven provided a summary of the reports included in the meeting packet. He touched upon the following: Distinguished Author Lecture series; the upcoming Dolores Huerta visit to Gilroy; National Library Card sign-up month; Bookdrop pilot program at Los Altos and Cupertino; and a push to promote voting through the National Voting Registration Drive. B. Gilroy Library Report (report attached) Gilroy Community Librarian Cassandra Wong provided a summary of the reports included in the meeting packet. Among the topics, Cassandra mentioned the upcoming Dolores Huerta talk in November; 10-year anniversary of the new Gilroy Library building; new preschool program; the importance of the Friends of the Library; summary of the summer programs at the library—50 children programs, 4,000 participants, 9,000 meals served; and much more. X. COMMISSION COMMENTS – Sumana spoke about becoming a member of the Friends of the Gilroy Library. XI. STAFF COMMENTS – Henig reminded commissioners about the upcoming Library Commission presentation to City Council on November 7. Executive Summary At the conclusion of the calendar year, the Library Commission approves the following year’s meeting schedule. Historically, the Commission has not met monthly, but four or five times a year. Below is a list of the number of Commission meetings held on an annual basis since 2020. This year’s theme is “Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation.” One of the best examples of the power of unity is the organizing efforts by the United Farm Workers (UFW) beginning in the mid-1960s. SCCLD is proud to announce UFW co-founder Dolores Huerta will be the focus of a new exhibit at Gilroy Library. The exhibit, titled Dolores Huerta: Revolution in the Fields/Revolución en los Campos, was organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service in collaboration with the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery and will be featured in the Gilroy Library from Saturday, November 5, 2022 through Monday, January 23, 2023. This exhibition received federal support from the Latino Initiatives Pool, administered by the Smithsonian Latino Center. In addition to the exhibit, Dolores Huerta will make a special appearance as part of a panel discussion with film director and actor Luis Valdez, and educator Francisco Jimenez. Spanish translation will be provided for those who wish it. Aztec Dance group Danza Conchera Nauhcampa will perform at 1 pm before the event, with Mariachi Tapatio slated to perform after the panel presentation at 3:30 pm. Dr. Miller will be in conversation with County Supervisor, Joe Simitian about the connections between health, food, and agriculture with the goal of building a healthier and more resilient food system. Miller is a family physician, science writer, and clinical professor. Gilroy Library Patio’s New Look The Gilroy Library is dramatically enhancing its patio area adjacent to the lobby and children’s room. Now open and nearly finished, this beautiful space has improved shade, lighting, and power options for future Library events in an outdoor setting. There is seating for studying, reading, and relaxation alongside play and create areas. With a focus on experiential learning, the library aims to create a fun space for young children and their grownups focused on skill building with imaginative play, art, and motor development. Marlene Iwamoto, who previously has served as the Community Librarian for Los Altos and Woodland and mostly recently as the Library Service Manager for Organizational Development, will be responsible for Strategy and Staff Development. Iwamoto has worked for SCCLD for over 20 years and served at each library at one point in a variety of frontline and management positions. Nichole King, who is the Community Librarian for Saratoga, is returning to the Campbell Express Library effective October 17 as its new Community Librarian following the retirement of Community Librarian Peggy Tomasso. King had served as the Children’s Supervising Librarian for many years at Campbell Library before her promotion to Community Librarian. Cultural Exhibits at the Library The fight for rights by Chinese American women at the federal and state levels is the focus of an exhibit happening now through January 2023 at Cupertino Library titled Herstory 2: The Legal History of Chinese American Women. Based on the book of the same title by Dr. Chang C. Chen, the exhibit offers a rare look at the stories of the women behind the evolution of law that affects the rights of all of us. The exhibit panels are on the library’s second floor. Gilroy Library is hosting Dolores Huerta: Revolution in the Fields/Revolución en los Campos from Saturday, November 5, 2022 through Monday, January 23, 2023. The exhibit was organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service in collaboration with the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery and received federal support from the Latino Initiatives Pool, administered by the Smithsonian Latino Center.
