MINUTES OF THE REGULAR
YOUTH COMMISION MEETING
7:00 P.M.
Monday, July 14, 2014
CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 7:04 p.m. by Chair Miner.
INTRODUCTIONS
Suhita Alluri and Kaliyah Harrison from the local nonprofit, Breathe California, were
introduced. Breathe California promotes asthma education, tobacco control, and lung health in
the community.
ROLL CALL & SECRETARY’S REPORT
All Commissioners were present except Commissioner Pena-Tomasetti, who was excused, and
Commissioners Spath and Straub who were absent.
APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES
Commissioner Navarro motioned to approve the minutes of June 9, 2014 and
Commissioner Filice seconded the motion.
Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.
APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA
Commissioner Baxter motioned to approve the agenda for July 14, 2014 and Commissioner
Baxter seconded the motion.
Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.

None.
PUBLIC COMMENT
None.
OLD BUSINESS
A. End of Season Social
Advisor Bielecki opened the discussion by asking for suggestions for the end of season
social. Chair Miner offered to host a potluck dinner at her house and will be finalizing a
date for later in the month.
B. Presentation/Partnership with Gilroy Rotary
Chair Bielecki provided a recap of the presentation to Rotary. Commissioner P.
Sabharwal will be providing updates on her progress and give an update at the monthly
meeting in September
C. Run or Dye Event
Advisor Bielecki gave the group another option in regard to a 5K run. The Recreation
Department will be putting on a “Recycle Run” in April of 2015 and the Youth
Commission is invited to help host this event. The Commission decided to assist with the
“Recycle Run” but would still like to put on a Run or Dye event.
D. Basketball Clinic
Commissioner Filice discussed the best time to put on a basketball clinic at the Gilroy
Youth Center. He will finalize a date and time and report back at the September meeting.
NEW BUSINESS
A. Anti-Tobacco Presentation by Representatives from Breathe California
Representatives from Breathe California presented to the Commission in hopes of
partnering to achieve their goal of decreasing the effects of tobacco exposure, advertising
and use among the youth of Gilroy. Breathe California would like to provide the
Commissioners with free training so that they would be able to go out into the
community and educate their peers about the dangers of tobacco use. Advisor Bielecki
will follow up after the meeting to possibly coordinate the training for those interested in
participating.
B. Discussion Re: Youth Commission “Going Dark” for the Month of August
Advisor Bielecki asked if the Commission wished to “go dark” for the month of August
and put it to a vote of the Commission.
Commissioner Filice motioned to cancel the meeting for the month of August and
Commissioner Carpenter seconded the motion.
Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.

at 7:00 p.m. in the Gilroy Senior Center Meeting Room.
