YOUTH COMMISION MEETING

CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 7:03 p.m. by Chair P. Sabharwal.
INTRODUCTIONS
None.
ROLL CALL & SECRETARY’S REPORT
Members Present: Baxter, Carpenter, Filice, Garnica, Lombardo, Olivares, A. Sabharwal, P.
Sabharwal, Straub.
Members Absent: Spath, Yafai.
APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES
Commissioner Filice motioned to approve the minutes of February 9, 2015 and
Commissioner Carpenter seconded the motion.
The motion carried 9-0-2 (Commissioners Spath and Yafai were absent).
APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA
Commissioner Straub motioned to approve the agenda for March 9, 2015, and
Commissioner A. Sabharwal seconded the motion.
The motion carried 9-0-2 (Commissioners Spath and Yafai were absent).
COMMITTEE REPORTS
South County Youth Task
Commissioner Olivares reported that the group is asking for Youth Commission involvement in
helping educate parents and teens on drug usage.
General Plan Advisory Committee
Commissioner Lombardo reported that the group is currently discussing land use and building
infrastructure.
PUBLIC COMMENT
None.
OLD BUSINESS
A. Discussion Re: Youth Leadership Event
Commissioner P. Sabharwal introduced Commissioner Baxter as her new partner in
planning this event. Inviting the Salinas and Hollister Youth Commissions was discussed,
as well as having online registration. The group also talked about opening up the event to
our local Middle Schools, with the idea that it will be beneficial to expose them to
leadership concepts. Commissioner P. Sabharwal ended by reminding the group that
speakers need to be finalized by the end of this month.
B. Finalization of Pampered Princess Party - Saturday, March 14, 2015
Commissioner Carpenter assigned all Commissioners duties for this event and discussed
the times she would need all Commissioners there Friday and Saturday to help set up.
C. Discussion of GYC Shirts, Sweatshirts and other Promotional Items
Advisor Bielecki and Commissioner Baxter agreed on working together to look for the
design that would be printed on the Youth Commission apparel. They will then send it
out to the group for approval and Commissioners will choose their style of
shirt/sweatshirt.
D. Senior Ball – Saturday April 18, 2015
Tickets for the Senior Ball have officially gone on sale, with 36 tickets sold so far. The
band, catering and decorations are taken care of. The event will start at 5:00 p.m. and run
until 9:00 p.m. The only thing left for the Commission to complete is to finalize the
volunteers.
E. Youth Commission All High School Mixer
This event will be at the Christmas Hill Park Amphitheatre on Saturday, June 14, 2015.
Students, who are in the ninth through twelfth grade, this year, will be allowed to attend.
The owner of the Music Tree will be helping the Commission with lighting and music.
Commissioner Carpenter has decided that she will start publicity in May and has
discussed the possibility inviting the Youth Board to partner up with us in making this a
successful event.

Fundraising to offer local scholarship.
STAFF COMMENTS
Advisor Bielecki reminded the group about Commissioner Filice’s basketball tournament on
Saturday, March 21st.
ADJOURNMENT
Chair P. Sabharwal adjourned the meeting at 8:21 p.m.
FUTURE MEETING
The next regular meeting of the Youth Commission will be held on Monday, April 13, 2015
at 7:00 p.m. in the Gilroy Senior Center Meeting Room.
