I. CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Youth Commission was called to order by Chair A.
Sabharwal at 6:01 P.M.
II. FLAG SALUTE
Flag salute was led by Chair A.Sabharwal.
III. SECRETARY'S REPORT
The meeting packet was posted on the City’s website on Wednesday, April 3, 2019
at 10:40 A.M. and the agenda was posted in the Public Notice Cabinet on
Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at 11:00 A.M.
IV. ROLL CALL
Members Present: Chair Akash Sabharwal, Vice Chair Justin Fajardo,
Commissioner Bryan Alonso (arrived late at 6:13 P.M.), Commissioner Kenneth
Apte, Commissioner Bettye Chargin, Commissioner Elizabeth Van Sambeek,
Commissioner Senna Kolagotla, Commissioner Edwin Lopez, Commissioner
Vikash Sabharwal, Commissioner Paul Song and Commissioner Jane Tovar
Members Excused: All commissioners present
Members Absent: None
Staff Present: Vince Bautista
V. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
A. Minutes of the March 11, 2019 meeting
Motion was made by Chair Fajardo to approve the minutes of the March 11,
2019 regular meeting as written. The motion was seconded by Commissioner
Chargin. The motion carried with a 10-0-1 vote (Absent: Commissioner
Alonso).
VI. APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Motion was made by Commissioner Kolagotla to approve the agenda of
Monday, April 8, 2019 regular meeting. The motion was seconded by

Commissioner Song. The motion carried with a 10-0-1 vote (Absent:
Commissioner Alonso).
VII. AWARDS/RECOGNITIONS
None. However, Commissioner Alonso arrived late at 6:13 P.M.
VIII. INTRODUCTIONS
None.
IX. PUBLIC COMMENT ON ITEMS NOT ON THE AGENDA
None.
X. NEW BUSINESS
No new items under new business.
XI. OLD BUSINESS
A. Status of Budget Input for Commission Related Items for
Upcoming Budget Cycle
Staff Bautista shared that the status of the Budget Input for the Upcoming 2020-
2021 Budget Cycle remains pending. Staff Bautista will give an update at the next
Youth Commission meeting in May.
B. Final Recap on Pampered Princess Party
Staff Bautista reported that the Gilroy Youth Commission received a donation of
forty-one dollars ($41.00) at the Pampered Princess Party event. Donations were
placed at check-in of the Pampered Princess Party. Parents and participants were
asked if they wanted to volunteer to donate any funds to the Gilroy Youth
Commission. Furthermore, the Gilroy Youth Commission agreed to donate the
forty-one dollars to the Gilroy Youth Scholarship fund. The idea the commission
shared was giving back to the community and youth of Gilroy who can have the
opportunity to participate in recreation sports and activities. Motion was made by
Vice Chair Fajardo to donate the forty-one dollars to the Youth Scholarship
fund. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Apte. The motion carried
with a 11-0-0 vote.
C. 2138 : Final Update on May Presentation to City Council

The Gilroy Youth Commission reviewed the May City Council Presentation
handout as a group. Staff Bautista reminded the commission that City Council
requested a five (5) minute presentation with only five (5) slides in the presentation.
Chair A. Sabharwal and Vice Chair Fajardo are taking the lead to present to City
Council on Monday, May 6, 2019 at 6:00 P.M. The rest of the commission will be
in attendance and support of there fellow commissioners.
Chair A. Sabarwal and Vice Chair Fajardo practiced six (6) times on the
presentation to the commission. This process took approximately fifty (50) minutes
to prepare for the presentation. After each presentation, the commission shared
there advice and opinions to Chair A. Sabharwal and Vice Chair Fajardo. For
example, Commissioner Song wanted to include the Youth Commissions mission
statement in the presentation. Furthermore, Commissioner Chargin requested more
details in the issues affecting youth in the community. Also, staff Bautista
recommended to include Pampered Princess Party, Breakfast with Santa and Youth
Community Social attendance numbers. For example, one-hundred and seventeen
(117) participants participated in the Pampered Princess Party and forty (40)
volunteers assisted with the event.
XII. COMMITTEE REPORTS
A. Summary of General Plan Advisory Committee Meeting
Commissioner V. Sabharwal explained that the bulk of the presentation was on
economic planning. The meeting was held back in March at the Gilroy Library
Conference Room. City Council Member Cat Tucker was present as well as Mayor
Roland Velasco. The committee plans to protect the Gilroy Outlets by keeping them
efficient and sanitary. One thing the committee wants to build on is community
education for parents and teens. This entailed overall health, education, language
and life skills. Commissioner V. Sabharwal will continue to keep the commission
up to date on any future General Plan Advisory Committee meetings.
XIII. AGENDA ITEMS FOR NEXT MEETING
Status for Commission Related Items for Upcoming Budget Cycle for 2020-2021.
Recap on May Presentation to City Council.
Gilroy Youth Commission Goals for 2019-2020 Year.
The Commission didn’t vote on this item after the motions were made. They
will need to motion and vote on this item at their next meeting.
XIV. STAFF COMMENTS
Staff Bautista praised the Youth Commission, Chair A. Sabharwal and Vice Chair
Fajardo for all their efforts and hard work.
XV. ADJOURNMENT
A motion was made by Vice Chair Fajardo to adjourn the meeting. The motion
was seconded by Commissioner Lopez. The motion carried with a 11-0-0 vote.
Chair A. Sabharwal adjourned the meeting at 7:17 P.M.

XVI. FUTURE MEETINGS
The next regular meeting of the Gilroy Youth Commission will be held on Monday,
May 13, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. in the Gilroy Senior Center Meeting Room.
