Subject: EXTERNAL - Unhoused Ordinance on 6-5-2023 Agenda
Looking at tonight's packet those who have written in as well as speakers on May 15th who
expressed their opposition have made valid points. I don't want to reiterate the same. I do,
however, wish to point out that city council has an obligation to expend funds to our non-profits
who serve our marginalized community. Last year the compassion center was not given the usual
forty thousand, luckily the county filled the gap. If you believe that resources are bountiful and are a
cause for increased unhoused in our community I urge those who are not as well acquainted to
spend a few days walking our streets. Get up around six AM, take a backpack with a few essentials
water, a few dollars-no ATM, or credit cards and check out the providers on the days they set up
grab a meal, in the pm find Jan and grab a sandwich/dinner. Remember leave your backpack at the
front of local
businesses if you are lucky enough to be allowed the use of a restroom. Some San Jose city council
members are planning to spend a night at a local shelter. Granted my proposal may not have the
same impact, because at the end of the day you the comforts of home.
Lastly, I do hope that you will reconsider the proposed ordinance until you have input from our
unhoused/nonprofits, etc.
Looking at our constitution I fail to see where there is a distinction of civil rights being different for
unhoused and housed folks. Hopefully, you will thread lightly we as a community are all affected. I
would take the possibility of our City being drawn into litigation as a potential possibility, simply
because this ordinance is targeting a specific group of people.
