MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE
ARTS AND CULTURE COMMISSION
5:30 P.M.
January 10, 2012
CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 5:32 p.m. by Vice Chair Harris.
SECRETARY'S REPORT
All Commissioners were present except Commissioners Dunkle and Seariot who were excused.
Christopher High School Student Representative Julianna Vanni and Planning Commissioner
Brad Bannister were also present.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion made by Commissioner Willard to approve the minutes of November 8, 2011, as
corrected. Commissioner Morasca seconded the motion.
Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.
Motion made by Commissioner Heath to approve the special meeting minutes of December
7, 2011. Commissioner Willard seconded the motion.
Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
A motion was made by Commissioner Willard to approve the agenda for January 10, 2012.
The motion was seconded by Commissioner Heath

Vice Chair Harris introduced Richard Villalba-Navarette, one of the new Commissioners.
Mr. Villalba-Navarette shared some of his ideas and why he felt he would be a "good fit"
on the Commission. His family was also introduced.

PUBLIC COMMENT
None.
OLD BUSINESS
A. Discussion/Decision on Next month's Art du four Column
It was decided that the February column will highlight Kids Discover Arts which will be
held in March. Commissioner Villalba-Navarette suggested that it might be nice to
engage the community, by having them email Chair Harris with their suggestions for new
events, as well as trying to inspire people to come to the meetings and speak up.
Commissioner Heath informed the Commission that Pintello Comedy Theater will be
celebrating its IOth anniversary this year and Limelight Actors Theater is celebrating its
1st anniversary.
B. Calendar Updates & Assignments
Vice Chair Harris explained how the calendar works for the new Commissioner's benefit.
Sondra Banks will send them the user ID and password for accessing the Google
Calendar.
C. Discussion/Review of Art & Business Award
Vice Chair Harris reminded the Commissioners that originally these awards were going
to be given at the Kids Discover Arts Fundraiser which is going to be held in May. But,
since The Dennis Daniels Company is the "front runner" for receiving the award it may
be more prudent to give it out at the Arts Roundtable Forum each year.
Commissioner Willard stated that PAC is also considering giving some type of award out
this year and giving them out at the same function would be appropriate.
Motion made by Commissioner Morasca that the Art & Business Award be given at
the Annual Roundtable Forum as well as the Public Art Committee Award being
given at the same time (if ready). The motion was seconded by Commissioner
Willard.
Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.
NEW BUSINESS
A. Election of Chair, Vice -Chair, Historian of the ACC for 2012 & Chair of PAC for
2012
Commissioner Morasca nominated Vice Chair Harris as Chair for 2012.
Nomination was seconded by Commissioner Willard.
Hearing no objections it was so ordered.
Commissioner Willard nominated Commissioner Morasca as Vice Chair for 2012.
Nomination was seconded by Commissioner Heath.
Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.
Commissioner Heath agreed to continue as the Commission Historian.

Chair Harris nominated Commissioner Willard for Chair of the Public Art
Committee for 2012. Nomination was seconded by Vice Chair Morasca.
Hearing no objections it was so ordered.
B. Mayor Pinheiro's Pasco Project & Selection of Arts & Culture Commission
Representative (1) to Serve on Pasco Project Committee
Chair Harris explained that only one (1) representative is needed for the Paseo Project.
Commissioners explained the project to Commissioner Villalaba. He agreed to be the
ACC representative to the Pasco Project with the Mayor.
C. Selection of October Date for 3rd Annual Arts & Culture Commission Arts
Roundtable Forum — Wednesday, October 24, 2012, from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m.
Motion made by Commissioner Heath to have the 3rd Annual Arts & Culture
Commission Arts Roundtable Forum on Wednesday, October 24, 2012, from 2:00 -
5:00 p.m. Motion was seconded by Vice Chair Morasca.
Hearing no objections it was so ordered.
Sondra Banks will let the Mayor know the date of the Roundtable Forum so he can
calendar it right away.
D. Change of Time (5:00 p.m. start time) of Arts & Culture Commission Meetings
Chair Harris explained to the Commission that it would be advantageous for her to have
the Arts & Culture Commission meetings begin at 5:00 p.m. rather than 5:30. This way
she would not have to leave early for other meetings. Other Commissioners stated it
would be helpful to them as well.
Motion made by Commissioner Willard to change the time of the monthly ACC
meetings from 5:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Motion was seconded by Commissioner
Heath.
Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.
E. Selection of ACC Commissioner to Accept Rotary Club Grant — Tues., January 31"t
Chair Harris explained that Cathy Mirelez would like to have an Arts & Culture
Commissioner attend the January 31't Rotary Club luncheon and accept the grants
awarded for Kids Discover Arts and the Young Artists Poster Contest. Chair Harris
stated she would like to attend and Commissioner Heath volunteered to attend, as well.
These two (2) Commissioners will represent both the ACC and the Public Art
Committee.

GILROY ARTS ALLIANCE UPDATE
Commissioner Heath reported the following: just opened up the guild for the month of January;
the Alliance is on the January 23`a Council agenda regarding retrofit of the Center building to get
approved for assembly. He will be presenting estimates to the Council and will also ask for
funds to get that work done. Commissioner Heath will be sending out reminder emails for ACC
& PAC to attend that meeting for support.
Chair Harris informed Commissioner Heath that she will be out of town on the 23`a so she will
be unable to attend the Council meeting.
STAFF REPORT
A. Cultural Arts Programs/Events
• Review of Cultural Arts section in Activity Guide - pages 7-9
• 60 young actors auditioned for Spring Theater production Seussical, Jr.
• Last filming for Gleeful taking place this weekend (1/14 & 15)
• Gleeful will be shown in Morgan Hill at the Cinelux Theater at Tennant Station
on 6 consecutive Sundays, February — April, 2012
• Beginning coordination of Kids Discover Arts and the Young Artists Poster
Contest
B. Museum Projects/Tours/Displays
None.
Christopher High School Student Representative Vanni reported the following:
• AP classes are getting more intense
• Little Shop of Horrors was very well received.
• Senior Play is coming up — Who Shot the Sheriff. Auditions are going on now.
Performances will be March 91h at 7:30; March loth at 2:00 and 7:30 p.m.; and on March
I Ith at 2:00 p.m.
• The Spring Concert is once again in April
• Cooper's Closet is becoming a great success. Articles informing the public were in three
(3) papers and they will be receiving an award from the Chamber of Commerce on
January 18th. Cooper's Closet will also be featured in a magazine. She explained that the
name Cooper's Closet came from the school's Cougar mascot whose name is Cooper.
• She was accepted at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego. She asked the
Commissioners to let her know if they have any suggestions for scholarships in Gilroy.
• She is working with her art teacher to find her replacement on the Commission. It was
suggested that the new representative attend the May and June meetings with her.
Chair Harris informed the Commission that Gilroy High School is putting on the musical
You're a Good Man Charlie Brown beginning March 8th and runs for two (2) weeks.
She is also in the process of finding a Gilroy High School Representative to the Arts & Culture
Commission. She will be confirming the person in the next day or so and will send Sondra
Banks all the contact information.

Chair Harris adjourned the meeting at 6:27 p.m.
FUTURE MEETING
The next regular meeting of the Arts & Culture Commission will be held on Tuesday, February
14 2012, in City Council Chambers located at 7351 Rosanna Street, Gilroy, CA.
