ARTS AND CULTURE COMMISSION

April 10, 2012
CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 5:07p.m. by Chair Harris.
SECRETARY'S REPORT
All Commissioners were present except Commissioner Dunkle who was excused.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion made by Commissioner Heath to approve the minutes of March 13, 2012. Vice
Chair Morasca seconded the motion.
Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
A motion was made by Vice Chair Morasca to approve the agenda for April 10, 2012. The
motion was seconded by Commissioner Willard.
Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.
INTRODUCTIONS
CHS Representative Juliana Vanni introduced the new Representative Jordan Burns who will
take over for Juliana.

None.
PUBLIC COMMENT
None.
OLD BUSINESS
A. Discussion/Decision on Next month's Art du Jour Column
Chair Harris reported that the May column will highlight Julianna Vanni (June), 5t'
Street Live and Young Artists Poster Contest, CHS Rep, Band Leader at GHS and CHS
Greg Grant (May). PAC Raffle
Commissioner Villalba- Navarette stated he would be willing to sell tickets for the raffle.
Cathy Mirelez asked him to send her an email and she will give him the info to reach
Judy Bozzo.
B. Calendar Updates & Assignments
None. Commissioner Dunkle was absent.
C. Retreat Agenda Topics & Potluck Items — Friday May 4, 2012 -11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Two items to be added to the Retreat agenda are Memorial. Day Parade for 2013 and
Possible Scholarship Fund (Commissioner Villalba - Navarette). Potluck items given were
given to Cathy Mirelez. Sondra Banks sent out the draft retreat agenda for the
Commissioners. Anyone wishing to add to the list should email Ms. Banks.
D. Budget — Review of Arts & Culture Commission's 801 Account
Cathy Mirelez distributed a spreadsheet with an accounting of the funds in the ACC's 801
account. She informed the Commission that she did not need to use the $500 they voted
to give to Kids Discover Arts.
NEW BUSINESS
A. Discussion on ACC Participation in Gilroy's Annual Memorial Day Parade
Commissioner Dunkle was not in attendance so this was not discussed. Commissioner
Scariot will take on the responsibility of looking into promoting the Commission, the
Public Art Committee and the Arts Center next year during the Memorial. Day Parade.
This will also be added to the Retreat agenda.
B. Possible Arts & Culture Commission Fundraiser for Scholarship Fund
Commissioner Vill alba- Navarette explained his ideas for the Commission to raise money
for a possible Scholarship Fund that they could award to one (1) GHS student and one (1)
CHS student each year. Cathy Mirelez stated that she would have to check with the
Finance Department to see if that was something that could be done by the City. If not,
maybe the Gilroy Arts Alliance could entertain the idea.
This will also be added to the Retreat agenda.
PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE UPDATE
Commissioner Willard reported that the March 28th meeting was dedicated to the finalization of
plans for the Art in the Park event to be held on March 31st. The PAC annual Retreat will be
held on Saturday, May 19th. There was discussion regarding taking over the Adaptive Program's
Fireworks Booth but PAC voted against it.

STAFF REPORT
A. Cultural Arts Programs /Events
Our Spring Theater production of Seussica! opens Friday at the Gilroy High
School theater and continues through the following weekend, with performances
on Fri /Sat evenings at 7:00 p.m. and Sat/Sun matinees at 3:00 p.m. — flyers were
distributed to Commission members.

Young Artists Poster Contest — 79 entries were received (about same as last year),
Judging takes place April 11'h. Sixteen (16) entries will receive the Judges
Favorite Awards, and those posters will be presented to City Council at an
upcoming meeting. The posters will then be on display in the City Hall gallery
through the end of May.
Susan Voss and Cathy Mirelez will be staffing Recreation's Fireworks Booth over
the 4`h of July holiday week, with proceeds to benefit Recreation programming.
B. Museum Projects/Tours/Displays
Museum volunteers have completed a rough draft of a plan for removal of
deaccessioning items
The current Mayor's Display in the City Hall glass cases will run through the end
of June, in honor of the CA Primary election and in support of an Election
Display coordinated by City Clerk Shawna Freels.
The Gilroy Historical Society received matching funds from the Gilroy Foundation for a
grant to edit a Video Tour of the Gilroy Museum. The DVD will be available for check-
out for those not able to access the Museum
STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES
CHS Representative Juliana reported that there will be an Arts & Culture Auction Show, in the
Library on 4/17 from 6:00 — 8:00 p.m. Student's work is what is being sold.
Choir Concerts — 4/18 St. Mary's, 4/19 Mission in San Juan Bautista both at 7:30 p.m.

FUTURE MEETING
The next regular meeting of the Arts & Culture Commission will be held on Tuesday, May 8,
2012, at 5:00 p.m. in City Council Chambers located at 7351 Rosanna Street, Gilroy, CA.

Gilroy Arts Alliance April 2012 Update by Commissioner Heath
Center for the Arts
March's Youth Art Exhibit was a huge success, bringing in all ages from
children to grandparents to see the exhibit.
Limelight Actors Theater is in rehearsals for "Weekend Comedy ", opening
April 27th at the Center. Our resident theater won 'Best Theater" for the area
in the Out & About Magazine "Who Do You Love ?" Reader's Choice Ballot.
Another coup for the Interim Center for the Arts.
Special Event Permit restrictions, regarding wine at the Center, has had a
positive resolution with COG.
April's Exhibit: Young Artists Garlic Festival Posters from COG, has had a dely
and will briefly be displayed at the end of the month. Our replacement
exhibit is the Art of Joanne Robinson.
May Exhibit: Art of Our Mothers and Fathers.
Outreach to the Arts Community
In addition to creating a guild to be in charge of operating future Art and
Craft Shows at the Center, GAA has reached out to other local artists to
coordinate exhibits at the Center. Our goal is to put exhibits in the hands of
local artists to foster interest, participation, ownership and assistance.
Implementation will begin in August.
