05/08/2012 Arts and Culture Commission Regular Meeting Adopted 06/12/2012CITY OF GILROY MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE ARTS AND CULTURE COMMISSION 5:00 P.M. May 8, 2012 CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 5:04 p.m. by Chair Harris. SECRETARY'S REPORT All Commissioners were present except Commissioner Willard who was excused. GHS Student Representative Arellano and Planning Commissioner Brad Bannister were also present. CHS Student Representative Burns was absent. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion made by Commissioner Heath to approve the minutes of April 10, 2012. Vice Chair Morasca seconded the motion. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered. APPROVAL OF AGENDA A motion was made by Commissioner Heath to approve the agenda for May 8, 2012. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Dunkle. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered. INTRODUCTIONS Chair Harris introduced Jailene Arellano, the new Gilroy High School Student Representative to the Commission. Jailene informed the Commission that she will be a junior next year and she is a member of the GHS Chamber Choir, is involved in the art & literary magazine and has been in all of the plays with Ethan Stock. AWARDS/RECOGNITIONS None. PUBLIC COMMENT None. OLD BUSINESS A. Discussion/Decision on Next month's Art du Jour Column Chair Harris reported that the June column will highlight Julianna Vanni; who received a Congressional Art Award recently. Also highlighted will be the Recreation Department's summer classes. In July, Chair Harris will highlight the new Arts & Culture Commissioners, the Memorial Day activities and the Garlic Festival. B. Calendar Updates & Assignments Commissioner Dunkle asked the Commissioners how they felt about getting the appointment requests regarding attending arts events. Comments from Commissioners followed. It was decided that Commissioner Dunkle would continue sending out the meeting requests for events now that everyone understands the process. Commissioner Dunkle then reviewed the month of May arts events taking place and he was given additional events to add. C. Wrap -Up on May 4, 2012 Retreat The consensus was that the Retreat was very successful and productive. A. Selection of Committee Chair for Garlic Festival Fundraiser Motion was made by Commissioner Scariot that Chair Harris chair the Garlic Festival Fundraiser. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Heath. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered. PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE UPDATE None. GILROY ARTS ALLIANCE UPDATE See Commissioner Heath's attached report. The Dispatch asked Commissioner Heath if he would blog for the Arts and he agreed to do it. He is already blogging for Patch.com. STAFF REPORT A. Cultural Arts Programs/Events • Auditions for our Summer Theater production, Disney's Aristocats Kids took place this past Saturday/Sunday, with a total of 48 young actors being cast. The Parent/Cast member Orientation meeting is Wed., May 9th, with rehearsals beginning May 16th. Production will take place at South Valley Middle School in early July. • Young Artists Poster Contest — 79 entries were received and 16 were chosen to receive Judges Favorite Awards, with 3 young artists to have their posters printed professionally, and distributed throughout City/School District facilities. All award winners will be presented at Gilroy City Council on Monday, May 21st at 6:00 PM in Council Chambers. All posters are currently on display at City Hall. • This year the Fireworks Booth will benefit the Adaptive Program and Kids Discover Arts. We will be soliciting help from our Commissioners for this effort. Dates are Sunday, July 1 st — Wednesday, July 4th, with 2 — 3 shifts per day, and 2 — 3 volunteers at each shift. More information will be coming soon! • On Garlic Festival Friday, we are responsible for selling tickets at Gate 2, with volunteer hours to benefit Kids Discover Arts, also. 0] B. Museum Projects/Tours/Displays None. STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES GHS Student Representative Jailene Arellano reported the following: Grease play is opening this Friday at Christopher High School; she hosted an exchange student from the Sister City Takomashi and she brought them a beautiful calligraphy piece for her family. Jailene said she would like to return the favor when she goes over there and asked that if any of the Commissioners had items that she could bring with her as gifts she would appreciate it. She will be leaving on June 19d. Commissioner Scariot said she would donate a copy of the "Gleeful" film. Commissioner Heath said he would also ask Artist Jo Anne Robinson if she would donate one of her little paintings on an easel. Anything other items can be brought to the Commission's June 12th meeting to give to Jailene. No report from CHS as Student Representative Jordan Burns was absent. STAFF COMMENTS None. ADJOURNMENT Chair Harris adjourned the meeting at 5:52 p.m. The next regular meeting of the Arts & Culture Commission will be held on Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at 5:00 p.m. in City Council Chambers located at 7351 Rosanna Street, Gilroy, CA.
