MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE
ARTS AND CULTURE COMMISSION
5:00 P.M.
January 8, 2013
CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 5:03 p.m. by Chair Harris.
SECRETARY'S REPORT
All Commissioners were present except Commissioner Villalba-Navarette who was excused.
CHS Student Representative Burns and GHS Student Representative Arellano were absent.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion made by Vice Chair Morasca to approve the minutes of November 13, 2012.
Commissioner Scariot seconded the motion.
Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.
Motion made by Commissioner Scariot to approve the minutes of December 5, 2012. Chair
Harris seconded the motion.
Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Motion made by Chair Harris to approve the agenda for January 8, 2013, with stated
change of order. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Dunkle.
Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.
INTRODUCTIONS
Chair Harris welcomed the two (2) new Commissioners- Phyllis Armenta and Barbara Bottini.
Commissioner Armenta served for eight (8) years on the Library Commission and is a Museum
Volunteer.
Commissioner Bottini has lived in Gilroy since 1968 (except for 10 years that she spent
overseas). She is also a Museum Volunteer.

None.
PUBLIC COMMENT
None.
OLD BUSINESS
A. Discussion/Decision on Next month's Art du Jour Column
Chair Harris informed the Commission that for the next column she will attempt again to
meet with Commissioner Villalba-Navarette to feature him as well as the two new
Commissioners to the Arts & Culture Commission. Also included will be information on
the next City theater production, Kids Discover Arts to be held on March 2°d and the
featured artist exhibiting his work in City Hall.
Vice Chair Scariot also mentioned that the Gilroy Arts Alliance is having a costume
exhibit in February.
Chair Harris asked Commissioners Armenta and Bottini to send their bios to her as well
as to Sondra Banks (for the Commission's web page).
B. Calendar Updates & Assignments
Commissioner Dunkle will be sending out events coming up for January. He also stated
that he would like to focus more on the Commission's website rather than the calendar.
All of this will be discussed at the Retreat.
C. Pasco Project Update
Commissioner Villalba-Navarette sent in a report that the Commissioners reviewed.
Commissioner Dunkle asked that Commissioner Villalba-Navarette be asked to elaborate
on his report at the February meeting.
A. Election of Chair, Vice Chair of Arts & Culture Commission for 2013 & Public Art
Committee Chair for 2013 (Ballot Voting for all)
Nominations were made for Chair, Vice Chair and Chair of the Public Art Committee.
Motion made by Chair Harris that Commissioner Carol Harris continue as the
Chair of the ACC, Commissioner Mattie Scariot be Vice Chair and Commissioner
Dave Dunkle be Chair of the Public Art Committee. The motion was seconded by
Commissioner Bottini.
Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.
B. Agenda Items for Upcoming Annual Arts & Culture Commission Retreat — January
25, 2013
The Commission was informed that Commissioner Annenta could not attend the Retreat
if it was held on Friday. Therefore, it was decided that the Retreat would be held on
Saturday, January 26`h from 9:00 a. M. to 12:30 p.m. if Maria De Leon is available.
Sondra Banks will let everyone know the final date.
The Commission reviewed last year's Retreat agenda as a resource for establishing the
2013 agenda. The 2013 Retreat agenda items were discussed. Commissioner Dunkle
had some suggestions for how the agenda should be focused. It was decided that he

would take the agenda items discussed and format them to align with his thoughts and
forward it to staff for finalization.
PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE UPDATE
None.
GILROY ARTS ALLIANCE UPDATE — Commissioner Morasea
None. The Alliance is on the Retreat Agenda for City Council to discuss financial assistance in
obtaining a new roof for the City of Gilroy Interim Center for the Arts. Members are meeting
individually with Council members to promote this effort.
STAFF REPORT
A. Cultural Arts Programs/Events
• The Recreation Department received notification from the Gilroy Rotary Club
that Kids Discover Arts was awarded a $2,000 grant and the Young Artists Poster
Contest received a $350 grant. The Awards Luncheon will be held at 12:00 p.m.
on Tuesday, January 291h at the Gilroy Elks Lodge. Chair Carol Harris and
Commissioner Barbara Bottini volunteered to attend the Luncheon, along with
Cathy Mirelez, to accept the grant checks.
• Programming for the new Winter/Spring season has commenced and classes
begin this week.
• Auditions for the Spring Theater production "Disney's Little Mermaid, Jr. " will
be Saturday, January 12th at the Gilroy Senior Center (audition postcards were
distributed). Performances will be at the Gilroy High School Theater in April.
• Work on the annual Kids Discover Arts event has begun. It will be held on
Saturday, March 2, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Wheeler Community
Center. This year, due to increased sponsorship funds, we are giving each
participant a Free Art ICrt to take home. The Commission will volunteer to staff
this table at the event.
B. Museum Projects/Tours/Displays
• The Museum is continuing with their deaccessioning project, and will be
presenting their annual report to the Commission soon.
STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES
None.
STAFF COMMENTS
Staff and the Commission thanked Commissioner Dunkle for a wonderful holiday gathering.
ADJOURNMENT
Chair Harris adjourned the meeting at 6:40 p.m.
FUTURE MEETING
The Arts & Culture Commission will have their Annual Retreat on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at
the Willey Cultural Center, 140 Fifth Street, Gilroy, CA 95020.

The next regular meeting of the Arts & Culture Commission will be held on Tuesday, February
12, 2013, at 5:00 p.m. in City Council Chambers located at 7351 Rosanna Street, Gilroy, CA.
