03/12/2013 Arts and Culture Commission Regular Meeting Adopted 04/09/2013CITY OF GILROY MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE ARTS AND CULTURE COMMISSION 5:00 P.M. March 12, 2013 CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 5:03 p.m. by Chair Harris. SECRETARY'S REPORT All Commissioners were present except Vice Chair Scariot who was absent. CHS Student Representative Burns (5:05 p.m.) and GHS Student Representative Arellano were present. Planning Commissioner Bannister was also present. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion made by Commissioner Bottini to Commissioner Morasca seconded the motion. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered. approve the minutes of February 12, 2013. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Motion made by Commissioner Morasca to approve the agenda for March 12, 2013. The motion was seconded by Chair Harris. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered. AWARDS/RECOGNITIONS None. PUBLIC COMMENT None. OLD BUSINESS A. Discussion/Decision on Next month's Art du Jour Column The following will be in the next column: • Set Designer Deborah Schwartz will be featured • Little Mermaid directed by Michelle Serrano and in collaboration with the City of Gilroy will be performed in April and will be in the column as well B. Calendar Updates & Assignments Commissioner Dun1de stated he is not getting much information regarding high school events. CHS Representative Jordan Burns stated that teachers Katie Booth and Amber Woodward will be contacting him with information on CHS. Chair Harris will also send him additional events for April. Commissioner Bottini asked if it would be helpful for her to send him information regarding the Symphony as well. She also asked Commissioner Dunkle where he had gotten the information included on the calendar for the Symphony. He stated he took it from the Symphony's website. It was decided that Commissioner Bottini will be sending the Symphony events to Commissioner Dunkle in the future. C. Open Government Ordinance Training Follow-up Chair Harris and Commissioner Scariot are the only two left on the Commission that need to complete the training and will do it right away. D. New Date for Annual Retreat — Consider Weekday Evening It was decided that Sondra Banks will check on Maria De Leon's availability in the evening for April 4, 11 and 25. Once the date is determined, she will send an email to the Commissioners. E. Pasco Project Update Sondra Banks informed the Commission that the next Pasco Project meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 28 h, 5:30 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce office downtown. Motion was made by Chair Harris that Vice Chair Seariot be the new Arts & Culture Commission representative on the Pasco Project. The alternate will be Commissioner Bottini (she is not available on March 28th). The motion was seconded by Commissioner Dunkle. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered Sondra Banks will give contact information to Jenny Knerr and Al Pinheiro. NEW BUSINESS None. PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE UPDATE Commissioner Dunkle reported on the following: a mural request for the Porcella Music Store blank wall (owned by the City) was presented by Dylan Kelly; PAC's Annual Retreat will be Wednesday, March 13th from 5:30 — 8:30 p.m.; currently working on two projects — the bench plaques (installation on March 20t) and the tiles at San Ysidro Park will be installed in March as well. yll.nyl mm1ot1LL1t1i,4urL` url/A1Lr—%-ommisslonerlviorasca Commissioner Morasca reported the following: 3/15 the current exhibit Costume as Art closes; 4/6 — 5/19 the new exhibit will be done by Young Artists (ages 5-19); submission deadline March 31st. Summer Art classes will be sponsored/funded through GAA. STAFF REPORT — Cathy Mirelez A. Cultural Arts Programs/Events • Kids Discover Arts was held on Saturday, March 2"d and we had a record number of attendees (4701). Commissioners Dunkle, Bottini and Armenta volunteered at the Little Artists Gift Set booth, and passed FREE Watercolor Art sets to participants. We ordered 420 and ran out near the end of the day, but all went well. Our Spring Theater production of Disney's The Little Mermaid, Jr. opens on Friday, April 5th at the Gilroy High School Theater. We are currently featuring the works of local children's photographer Rachelle Bedell in the City Hall gallery space. Her exhibit will hang through the end of April. B. Museum Projects/Tours/Displays None. STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES Christopher High School Representative Jordan Burns reported the following: talent show this Friday and Saturday (not just singing and dancing, there is quite a variety) 23 acts in all; having an art show in May after AP exams; Western Accreditation of School Programs (WASP) coming soon; 55 CHS students are in the Gavilan production of Bye Bye Birdie and they will be getting college credit for it. Performances will be 4126, 27 (Friday & Sat), 512, 513, 514 & and then 5110 & 11 rh) 3 weekends. Gilroy High School Representative Jailene Arellano reported the following: she worked at Kids Discover Arts in the Origami booth. It was her first time, but she will be doing it next year as she really enjoyed it. Quite a few GHS students volunteered; Annie performances are doing very well. Performances will be this Thursday, Friday and Saturday at GHS Theater beginning at 7:30 p.m. The Art & Literary Guild has been selling magazines and planning a talent show; the Chamber Singers are going on the Washington, DC tour the 1" week in April; GHS & CBS Chamber Singers will be joining the South Valley Symphony for the Mother's Day performance. STAFF COMMENTS None. ADJOURNMENT Chair Harris adjourned the meeting at 5:37 p.m. The next regular meeting of the Arts & Culture Commission will be held on Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at 5:00 p.m. in City Council Chambers located at 7351 Rosanna Street, Gilroy, CA.
