04/09/2013 Arts and Culture Commission Regular Meeting Adopted 05/14/2013CITY OF GILROY MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE ARTS AND CULTURE COMMISSION 5:00 P.M. April 9, 2013 CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 5:12 p.m. by Chair Harris. SECRETARY'S REPORT All Commissioners were present, Commissioner Dunkle (5:15 p.m.). CHS Student Representative Burns and GHS Student Representative Arellano were present. Planning Commissioner Bannister was also present. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion made by Commissioner Armenta to approve the minutes of March 12, 2013. Commissioner Morasca seconded the motion. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Motion made by Commissioner Morasca to approve the agenda for April 9, 2013, with the stated change of order. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Armenta. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered. None. AWARDS/RECOGNITIONS None. PUBLIC COMMENT None. OLD BUSINESS A. Discussion/Decision on Next month's Art du Jour Column The following will be featured in the next column: • Gilroy Interim Center for the Arts • Artist Louise Shields B. Calendar Updates & Assignments Chair Harris had a question about accepting invitations. Commissioner Armenta asked about the Museum Walking Tour being put on the calendar. She passed the 2013 schedule to Commissioner Dunkle. A. Planning for Arts & Culture Commission Annual Retreat — Thursday, April 25, 2013 — Willey Cultural Center It was decided that the agenda previously developed was sufficient. Potluck items were decided. B. 2013 Memorial Day Parade Participation by ACC Motion was made by Commissioner Dunkle that the ACC participate in the 2013 Memorial Day Parade. The motion was seconded by Chair Harris. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered. The organizing for this activity will be done at the Retreat. Commissioner Dunkle will prepare a "to do" list to work from. PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE UPDATE — Commissioner Dunkle See attached report PASEO UPDATE — Vice Chair Scariot • It was necessary to switch the Paseo themes — now the larger one will be the Historic one and the smaller one will be the Sister Cities. • The City has hired a construction company to clear the pathways between the buildings and those areas will be fenced off. • Project is still in the beginning stages, but has a lot of people that have said they will donate to the project GILROY ARTS ALLIANCE UPDATE — Commissioner Morasca Commissioner Morasca reported the following: • Young Artists Exhibit, April 6a' — May 19a', ages 5-18, Artist's Reception April 21't 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. • Call to Artists for June/July Landscapes (all mediums) Exhibit • Art & Wine Stroll May 4th 2:00 — 6:00 p.m. The Center will be featuring Sycamore Creek Winery inside and have live music outside • The GAA courtyard is taking shape with new pavers, landscaping and fence. Commissioners were invited to "check it out" • The Arts Council of Silicon Valley named the Gilroy Arts Alliance the Most Upcoming Arts Group in the County and is sending two members of GAA to the National Arts Conference in Pittsburg, PA this June. • GAA is requesting help from the Commission with the retro fit to the Center. They are asking for a letter of support for the retro fit from the Commission and want to know how to go about obtaining this letter. STAFF REPORT — Cathy Mirelez A. Cultural Arts Programs/Events • Disney's The Little Mermaid is in its final production weekend (April 12-14), with performances on Friday & Saturday evenings at 7:00 PM, and Saturday & h] Sunday matinees at 3:00 PM. Tickets are $9 each and are on a first come, first served basis. • Photos of the San Ysidro Park Tile Art project have been posted on the Recreation Facebook site. • A reminder that the Volunteer Recognition Reception is being held this Thursday, April 11`h at the Gilroy Senior Center, beginning at 6:30 PM. All Commissioners are invited. B. Museum Projects/Tours/Displays • The first attempt at finding a book seller for deaccessioned books has not been successful and other vendors are being sought. • The Museum and the Gilroy Historical Society are exploring a joint effort on an Oral History project with a Gavilan College instructor. The project is in its early stages and would not take place until the Fall. Christopher High School Representative Jordan Burns reported the following: they will have a booth at the Art & Wine Stroll to raise money for the Art Department; Art Show in May; Bye Bye Birdie begins April 260% Spring Fling Dance Recital in May at Gavilan Ms. Burns gave Commissioner Dunkle Kate Booth's email address. Gilroy High School Representative Jailene Arellano reported the following: GHS & CHS Chamber Singers went to Washington, DC for the Heritage Festival and took top honors in almost every category. They will be singing this Thursday at the Women in Touch Luncheon; at the San Luis Obispo Choir Festival this Friday, and April 12th, Tuesday & Wednesday, April 160' & 17a' they will be having their Spring Concerts at the San Juan Bautista Mission. STAFF COMMENTS Potluck items were decided. ADJOURNMENT Chair Harris adjourned the meeting at 5:56 p.m. The next regular meeting of the Arts & Culture Commission will be held on Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at 5:00 p.m. in City Council Chambers located at 7351 Rosanna Street, Gilroy, CA.
