MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE
ARTS AND CULTURE COMMISSION
5:05 P.M.
June 11, 2013
CALL TO ORDER.
The meeting was called to order at 5:05 p.m. -by Vice Chair Scariot.
SECRETARY'S REPORT
All Commissioners were present except for Chair Carol Harris. CHS Student Representative
Burns and GHS Student Representative Arellano were absent.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The motion was made by Commissioner Bottini to approve the Minutes of the
May 14, 2013, meeting. Commissioner Morasca seconded the motion. Hearing no
objections it was so ordered.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
The motion was made by Commissioner Morasca to approve the Agenda for June 11, 2013.
Commissioner Dunkle seconded the motion. Hearing no objections it was so ordered.
INTRODUCTIONS
There were no introductions.
AWARDS/RECOGNITIONS
There were no awards and recognitions.
PUBLIC COMMENT
There were no public comments.
OLD BUSINESS
A. Discussion /Decision on Next month's Art du Jour Column
The Fifth Street Live event and the City of Gilroy Adaptive Recreation fireworks booth
were suggested for the next column.
B. Calendar Updates & Assignments
Commissioner Dunkle reported that there had not been any updates or calendar items
added. Commissioner Dunkle and Commissioner Bottini will meet and work together on
the calendar for July.
C. Report on Joint Meeting with Public Art Committee & Gilroy Arts Alliance
Vice Chair Scariot gave a report on the Joint Meeting of June 4, 2013. She summarized
the reasons for the meeting as increased cooperation between the Arts' organizations,
participation in a joint activity, and a demonstration of the groups acting as a united force
for the Arts in Gilroy. Subcommittees charged with publicity, concessions and movie
selection were established; August 9, 2013 at 9:00 p.m. was chosen as the date with the
theme Movie Night under the Stars. The location is the lawn at the Gilroy Arts Alliance
building at the corner of Seventh Street and Monterey. The City of Gilroy will be paying
for the movie license and publicity and furnishing staff and a projector. The next Joint
Meeting is scheduled for June 24, 2013, at 6:30 p.m. at the Willey Cultural Center.
D. Discussion Re: Branding Banner Project & Theme <
By general consensus, this item was tabled until the next regular meeting when Chair
Harris will be present.
E. Discussion Re: Movie Night Collaboration w /City of Gilroy, Public Art Committee
Gilroy Arts Alliance
Vice Chair Scariot reported that the movie subcommittee was developing a list of G =rated
movies and would submit them at the next Joint Meeting. She noted that the Arts and
Culture Commission needed to confirm participation in the Movie Night by motion.
Commissioner Bottini moved that the Arts and Culture Commission would attend
and support activities necessary for the Movie Night. Commissioner Morasca
seconded the motion. Hearing no objections it was so ordered.
F. Discussion Re: Annual Roundtable — October 23, 2013
The commissioners discussed different formats that the Arts Roundtable might take as
well as possible topics, invitees, facilitators and the need for an outcome or product. Vice
Chair Scariot moved that she and Commissioner Harris would form a
subcommittee to organize the Arts Roundtable with the theme Branding the Arts.
Commissioner Bottini seconded the motion. Hearing no objections it was so ordered.
G. Discussion on Communications /Tools /Processes - Update
Commissioner Dunkle reviewed the costs for creating and maintaining a website and
suggested that free alternatives with minimal or simple maintenance would be the easiest
for the Commission to sustain. It was generally agreed that a Facebook page would best
suit the Commission. Commissioner Dunkle volunteered to create a Facebook page and
offer a tutorial for posting pictures. It was agreed that the Commissioners would discuss
the Facebook page content development at the next meeting and that they would have the
opportunity to take action on the item.
NEW BUSINESS
A. Arts & Culture Commission Annual Report to the City Council, August 5, 2013
The Commissioners discussed the need for a subcommittee to work on the Commission's
annual presentation to the Gilroy City Council. It was agreed that Commissioners Bottini
and Harris would undertake that task and Commissioner Dunkle would serve as an
alternate.

B. Nomination of Arts & Culture Commissioner to serve as a representative on the
General Plan Amendment Advisory Committee
The Commissioners discussed the upcoming General Plan Amendment process, the
Public Art Committee's desire for publically supported funding for public art, and the
expected commitment necessary for a representative to the General Plan Amendment
Advisory Committee. Staff member Cathy Mirelez also reviewed the report from City
Clerk Shawna Freels (report attached to the minutes) and informed the members that they
would be required to fill out a Statement of Economic Interest form as required by the
California Fair Political Practices Commission.
Commissioner Bottini moved that Commissioner Dunkle serve as the representative
from the Arts and Culture Commission to the General Plan Amendment Advisory
Committee. Commissioner Morasca seconded the motion. Hearing no objections it
was so ordered.
C. Discussion on Garlic Festival Pepsi Booth — Update
Vice Chair Scariot asked if any of the Commissioners had been able to contact
volunteers. It was suggested high school students might be the most willing to volunteer
since they need community service hours.
PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE UPDATE
Commissioner Dunkle reported that Louise Shields was introduced and participated in her first
Public Art Committee meeting. He noted that Dylan Kelly presented his mural concept and was
referred to the Gilroy Arts Alliance for further information. Commissioner Dunkle also presented
the subcommittee's information on a General Plan Amendment in support of city sponsored
funding for public art.
PASEO PROJECT REPORT — Commissioner Scariot
Vice Chair Scariot gave a summary of the subcommittee's progress on envisioning a historically
themed display that would relate the City of Gilroy's history. The display needs to be portable
and may include photographs applied to metal. Specific topics and photographs have yet to be
determined.
GILROY ARTS ALLIANCE UPDATE - Commissioner Morasca
Commissioner Morasca related that: a landscape exhibit is on display through July 30th, film
classes with 14 students are in session, Fifth Street Live concert series is progressing, and Garlic
Festival volunteers are being sought.
STAFF REPORT (Cathy Mirelez)
A. Cultural Arts Programs /Events
a. The Summer Theater production "Color My World" is taking place at the Christmas
Hill Park Amphitheater on Saturday, June 22nd at 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Tickets are
10.00 each.
b. The City of Gilroy Adaptive Recreation Fireworks Booth benefiting Adaptive and
Youth programs will be selling fireworks from July ISt through July 4 th

B. Museum Projects /Tours/Displays
Book vendors are being sought for deaccessioned books. Volunteers are being recruited
for the program.

Gilroy, CA.
