01/14/2014 Arts and Culture Commission Regular Meeting Adopted 02/11/2014CITY OF GILROY MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE ARTS AND CULTURE COMMISSION 5:00 P.M. January 14, 2014 CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 5:04 p.m. by Recreation Department Director Maria De Leon. SECRETARY'S REPORT All Commissioners were present except Commissioner Scariot who was excused. Student Representatives Garcia and Silva were present as was Planning Commissioner Brad Bannister. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion was made by Commissioner Morasca to approve the Minutes of the November 12, 2013 Regular Meeting. Commissioner Bottini seconded the motion. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Motion made by Commissioner Robinson to approve the agenda for January 14, 2014. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Brooner. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered. Maria De Leon introduced the new Arts & Culture Commissioner, Peter Wang. Commissioner Wang told the Commission that he and his wife moved to Gilroy from Ohio to be closer to their children and parents who are all in Northern California. They love the area and the accessibility to farmland. He retired from a jewelry manufacturing company as the chief financial officer. AWARDS/RECOGNITIONS None., PUBLIC COMMENT None. OLD BUSINESS A. Calendar Updates & Assignments Commissioner Bottini pointed out that the 9Lives Club closed in December. NEW BUSINESS A. Election of Chair, Vice Chair and Public Art Committee Chair Motion made by Commissioner Bottini that the following appointments be made for 2014: Mattie Scariot, Chair; Nicole Robinson, Vice Chair; and Bruce Morasca, Chair of the Public Art Committee. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Wang. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered. B. Gilroy Museum Annual Report Postponed to February meeting. C. Gilroy Historical Society's Recommendation for the Dispersal or Retention of the Annual Income from the Gilroy Museum Endowment Trust Fund Postponed to February meeting. D. Selection of Date for Annual Retreat Motion made by Commissioner Brooner that the date of the Arts & Culture Commission's Annual Retreat be February 11, 2014, in lieu of the regular monthly meeting. It will be held at the Willey House from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Bottini. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered. Maria De Leon informed the Commission that the Public Art Committee only has 3 active members due to illness and asked how the Commission felt about PAC attending the Arts & Culture Commission's Retreat. There was no objection to this proposal. E. Kids Discover Arts Maria De Leon informed the Commission that Kids Discover Arts would not be held on March 1, 2014 as originally planned. It is being moved to late summer or early fall and may be a collaboration with Gilroy Gardens. Discussion followed. The only concern was keeping it affordable if it was held at Gilroy Gardens. Commissioner Wang asked what KDA was and Ms. De Leon explained the event to him. F. Gilroy Rotary Grant Luncheon — Young Artists Poster Contest Grant Maria De Leon explained that this special event was given a Gilroy Rotary Grant and staff would like a commissioner to attend the luncheon and accept the check. The luncheon is Tuesday, January 28th at 12:00 p.m. and will be held at the Elks Lodge. Motion made by Commissioner Brooner that Commissioner Bottini attend the luncheon and accept the check. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Morasca. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered. PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE UPDATE — Commissioner Morasca Commissioner Morasca reported that the Public Art Committee met with Commissioner Bottini and discussed their concerns, desires for the needs of the Arts to be included in the General Plan. PASEO PROJECT UPDATE — Vice Chair Scariot None. GENERAL PLAN ACTION COMMITTEE UPDATE — Commissioner Bottini • See attached report. GILROY ARTS ALLIANCE UPATE — Commissioner Morasca December was a slow month due to the holidays. The South Bay Singers will be practicing every Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at the facility. Limelight Theater will be presenting — Shelton and Mrs. Levine. Performances begin at the end of January. DOWNTOWN BANNER PROJECT UPDATE — Vice Chair Scariot None. STAFF REPORT A. Cultural Arts Programs/Events: ➢ Young Artists Poster Contest — presentations will be made Monday, February 3`d at City Council meeting ➢ Kids Discover Arts - is rescheduled for late summer/early fall and it may be held at a new venue ➢ Carol Romo, new theater director of our spring production "Aladdin ", to be held at the GHS Theater in April. There were over 50 children who auditioned. B. Museum Projects/Tours/Displays: ➢ None. STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COMMENTS Gilroy High School - Andy Garcia reported the following: • See attached report.
