MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE
ARTS AND CULTURE COMMISSION
5:00 P.M.
February 11, 2014
The meeting was called to order at 5:07 p.m. by Chair Scariot.
SECRETARY'S REPORT
All Commissioners were present. Gilroy High School Student Representative Garcia was
present. Christopher High School Student Representative was absent.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion was made by Commissioner Bottini to approve the Minutes of the January 14,
2014 Regular Meeting. Commissioner Morasca seconded the motion.
Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Motion made by Commissioner Bottini to approve the agenda for February 11, 2014. The
motion was seconded by Commissioner Morasca.
Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.
PUBLIC COMMENT
None.
A. Presentation of Sculptures for Harvest Park
City of Gilroy Planner II Melissa Durkin addressed the Commission and explained why a
private project was before them for consideration.
It should be noted that Commissioner Morasca (also Chair of the Public Art Committee)
voiced his objection to this presentation being presented to the Arts & Culture
Commission and bypassing the Public Art Committee. Staff explained that due to the
Public Art Committee not being able to meet for the next several months (due to lack of a
quorum) it was felt that things should move forward by going to the ACC. The
presentation moved forward.
Melissa Durkin then introduced Paul K. Manyisha, Project Manager, to the Commission.
Mr. Manyisha thanked the Commission for allowing the project presentation to go
forward. Mr. Manyisha then introduced Ben Trautman, Artist, who presented the two
proposed kinetic art pieces.
Questions and discussion followed.
Motion made by Vice Chair Robinson that the proposed public art pieces be
approved and a recommendation sent to the City Council recommending that they
ppr-ove. The -motion -was -seconded -by- Commissioner Bottini.
Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.
Public Art Committee Chair Bruce Morasca stated that he would like to meet with
the artist (along with any other PAC members who wished to) to discuss the project
further. He noted that he was giving his approval to move the project forward.
B. Gilroy Museum Annual Report
Museum Volunteer Tom Howard presented the Museum's annual report to the
Commission. (See attached PowerPoint).
Chair Scariot thanked Mr. Howard for a wonderful presentation.
Motion made by Commissioner Bottini that the Museum Annual Report be
approved as presented. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Brooner.
Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.
C. Gilroy Historical Society's Recommendation for the Dispersal or Retention of the
Annual Income from the Gilroy Museum Endowment Trust Fund
Recreation Coordinator Susan Voss addressed the Commission due to the absence of the
Gilroy Historical Society's President Connie Rogers.
Motion made by Commissioner Bottini that the Interest from the Gilroy Museum
Trust Fund be dispersed to the Gilroy Historical Society for the purpose of
purchasing collection shelving. The motion was seconded by Commissioner
Morasca.
Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.

Chair Scariot adjourned the meeting at 6:09 p.m.

The next regular meeting of the Arts & Culture Commission will be held on Tuesday,
March 11, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. in City Council Chambers located at 7351 Rosanna Street,
Gilroy, CA 95020.
