06/10/2014 Arts and Culture Commission Regular Meeting Adopted 07/08/2014CITY OF GILROY MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE ARTS AND CULTURE COMMISSION 5:30 P.M. June 10, 2014 CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 5:30 p.m. by Chair Scariot. SECRETARY'S REPORT All Commissioners were present except Commissioner Wang who was excused. Christopher High School Student Representative Silva was also excused. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion was made by Commissioner Brooner to approve the minutes of the May 13, 2014 regular meeting. Vice Chair Robinson seconded the motion. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Motion made by Commissioner Bottini to approve the agenda for June 10, 2014, with the stated change of order. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Morasca. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered. INTRODUCTIONS Chair Scariot introduced Mayor Don Gage to the Commission. Mayor Gage then stated that he was there to answer any questions the Commissioners might have. The main concern of the Commissioners was the impact the Bond or Tax measure would have on the Arts in Gilroy. Mayor Gage stated that it is looking more and more like it will be the Tax measure rather than the Bond due to the recent polling. Mayor Gage went on to discuss the 2 measures and what it would mean for the Arts. Chair Scariot thanked the Mayor for attending and stated that he would be invited back to talk in greater length. PUBLIC COMMENT None. OLD BUSINESS A. Arts & Culture Commission Fundraising Maria De Leon went through the schedule for staffing of the Fourth of July booth. Everyone was aware of their shift(s). B. Review and Approval of Criteria for Art & Business Partnership Awards — Large Business & Small Business Maria De Leon reviewed the changes that the Commission requested be made at the May meeting. Motion was made by Commissioner Bottini that the changes to the Criteria for the Art & Business Partnership Awards — Large Business & Small Business be approved. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Morasca. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered. A. Presentation on Quality of Life Bond Maria De Leon gave the Commission the presentation regarding the Quality of Life Bond. She explained that this same presentation will be given to Gilroy community agencies, city businesses, organizations and social service groups throughout the community. The Commission thanked Ms. De Leon for sharing the presentation with them. Chair Scariot recommended that the presentation be given to the Gilroy Arts Alliance and the Gilroy Downtown Business Association. Discussion followed. Some of the Commissioners feel that the Mayor and the City Administrator are not on the same page when it comes to the Arts. PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE UPDATE Commissioner Morasca reported the following: ➢ the Call to Artist Letter for the Library Mural project was reviewed ➢ PAC would like to be involved in Movie Night again this year PASEO PROJECT UPDATE Chair Scariot reported that things are moving along. She is on the Committee to create the panels that will go along the Pasco. GENERAL PLAN ACTION COMMITTEE UPDATE See attached report. There was a question about a meeting that Commissioner Bottini missed. She informed the Commission that it was not a mandatory, regularly scheduled meeting of the GPAC. GILROY ARTS ALLIANCE UPDATE Commissioner Morasca reported the following: ➢ Limelight Lounge had their first cabaret show Saturday, June 7th — Patti Lemon performed and it was a success. The next cabaret will be Saturday, July 19th and all proceeds go to the Gilroy Arts Alliance. 2 ➢. GAA will be sponsoring a Summer Art Program (film, theater and art classes) June thru August. They also have the Star Arts Education Program and the Mariachi Academy of Music. STAFF REPORT Maria De Leon reported: A. Cultural Arts Programs/Events ➢ Disney Spectacular theater production, directed by performed at Christmas Hill Amphitheater on Friday, p.m. There will also be a performance on Saturday, number of participants who signed up. B. Museum Projects/Tours/Displays None. None. STAFF COMMENTS None. ADJOURNMENT Chair Scariot adjourned the meeting at 6:30 p.m. John Bisceglie, will be July llth at 3:00 and 6:00 July 12th due to the large FUTURE MEETING The next regular meeting of the Arts & Culture Commission will be held on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at 5:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers located at 7351 Rosanna Street, Gilroy, CA 95020.
