MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE
ARTS AND CULTURE COMMISSION
5:30 P.M.
January 13, 2015
CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at 5:32 p.m. by Chair Scariot.
SECRETARY'S REPORT
Arts & Culture Commissioners Present: Bruce Morasca, Alma Perez, Nicole Robinson,
Mattie Scariot and Peter Wang (5:35)
Arts & Culture Commissioners Excused: Barbara Bottini
Arts & Culture Commissioners Absent: Lori Brooner
Christopher High School Student Representative Silva and was also present.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion was made by Vice Chair Robinson to approve the minutes of the November 12,
2014 regular meeting. Commissioner Morasca seconded the motion.
The motion carried unanimously with a 5-0-2 vote (Barbara Bottini and Lori Brooner were
absent).
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Motion made by Commissioner Morasca to approve the agenda for January 13, 2015, with
stated change of order. The motion was seconded by Vice Chair Robinson.
The motion carried unanimously with a 5-0-2 vote (Barbara Bottini and Lori Brooner were
absent).
Chair Scariot introduced and welcomed newly appointed Arts & Culture Commissioner Alma
Perez to the Commission. The Commissioners each introduced themselves.
Chair Scariot congratulated Commissioners Bottini and Morasca on their reappointments.
PUBLIC COMMENT
None.
OLD BUSINESS
A. Movie Night Collaboration with the Public Art Committee and Gilroy Arts Alliance
Cathy Mirelez informed the Commission again that the City would pay for the licensing
for use of the movie. Chair Scariot asked for a Chair of a sub -committee to work on this
event. Commissioner Morasca will chair this sub -committee.
NEW BUSINESS
A. Selection of Chair and Vice Chair of Arts & Culture Commission for 2015
Motion by Commissioner Morasca that Commissioner Scariot continue as Chair of
the Arts & Culture Commission. The motion was seconded by Commissioner
Wang.
The motion carried unanimously with a 5-0-2 vote (Barbara Bottini and Lori
Brooner were absent).
Motion by Commissioner Morasca that Nicole Robinson continue as Vice Chair of
the Arts & Culture Commission. The motion was seconded by Commissioner
Wang.
The motion carried unanimously with a 5-0-2 vote (Barbara Bottini and Lori
Brooner were absent).
B. Selection of Chair of 2015 Public Art Committee
Motion by Chair Scariot that Commissioner Morasca continue as Chair of the
Public Art Committee. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Wang.
The motion carried unanimously with a 5-0-2 vote (Barbara Bottini and Lori
Brooner were absent).
C. Interviewing of Public Art Committee Applicants
No applicants; therefore no interviews.
D. Presentation by Christopher High School Drama Club
Not given. Discussion followed and it was decided that the Commission would invite the
Christopher High School Drama Club to attend their Annual Retreat on February 10,
2015 at 5:30 p.m. If that wasn't possible, Chair Scariot suggested that she and Vice
Chair Robinson meet with them in lieu of them coming to a regular Arts & Culture
Commission meeting.
Christopher High School Representative Ricky Silva will pass this information on to the
teachers.
E. Selection of Arts & Culture Commission Annual Retreat Date
Motion was made by Commissioner Morasca that the Retreat be held on Tuesday,
February 10th from 5:30 — 8:30 p.m. in lieu of the regular Arts & Culture
Commission in February. The motion was seconded by Vice Chair Robinson.
The motion carried unanimously with a 5-0-2 vote (Barbara Bottini and Lori
Brooner were absent).

PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE UPDATE
Commissioner Morasca emphasized the fact that the Public Art Committee is still in need of two
(2) additional members. He asked that the Arts & Culture Commission try to recruit candidates.
Chair Seariot suggested asking Kevin Heath to make an announcement of the need at his theater
productions.
The Public Art Committee had a special meeting to review the Call to Artist letter. It was
approved and the packet was sent out in early January.
Cathy Mirelez stated that the entire project is $12,000 (all 6 panels).
PASEO PROJECT UPDATE
Chair Scariot reported that the group met today. Chair Scariot explained the project for the
benefit of Commissioner Perez. She informed Commissioner Perez that the Paseo is located
between 5th and 6th streets so she could go and see it at her leisure.
GENERAL PLAN ACTION COMMITTEE UPDATE
None.
GILROY ARTS ALLIANCE UPDATE
Commissioner Morasca reported the following:
➢ Joan Perez-Robinson's art will be exhibited until February 15
➢ On January 6 —there was a workshop held Making Cards and Bring your own wine
➢ There is a new program for adult art students
➢ Limelight Theater's next production is "Rose's Dilemma" and begins January 23
STAFF REPORT
Cathy Mirelez reported:
A. Cultural Arts Programs/Events
➢ Auditions for our 2015 Spring Theater production Peter Pan will take place this coming
Saturday, January 17th, with performances scheduled at the GHS Theater the 1 st two
weekends in April.
➢ We received 196 poster entries for our Young Artists Poster Contest. The judges
convened in early December and 18 were chosen to represent the 6 different Age
Categories. Those 18 young artists will be presented at Gilroy City Council on Monday,
February 2,2015.
B. Museum Projects/Tours/Displays
➢ The Museum volunteers will be presenting their annual report to the Commission at the
March meeting. The Museum volunteers are also planning activities and scheduling
volunteers for the new year.
Christopher High School Representative Silva reported the following:
➢ Senior Play March 5-7 at 7:00 p.m. The Man Who Came to Dinner
Yours truly, Ricky Silva is in it
➢ Evita at Gavilan, Opening Night is May 1 and will run through May 16
➢ Want to encourage more of the Commission's support of the high school arts

ADJOURNMENT
Chair Seariot adjourned the meeting at 6:07 p.m.
The next regular meeting of the Arts & Culture Commission will be held on Tuesday, March 10,
2015 at 5:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers located at 7351 Rosanna Street, Gilroy, CA 95020.
