02/10/2015 Arts and Culture Commission Regular Meeting Adopted 03/10/2015ARTS AND CULTURE COMMISSION RETREAT SUMMARY FEBRUARY 10, 2015 The Retreat was called to order at 5:41 p.m. by Facilitator Maria De Leon. Everyone introduced themselves for the benefit of new Commissioner Sally Armendariz. Arts & Culture Commissioners Present: Sally Armendariz, Bruce Morasca, Alma Perez, Mattie Scariot and Peter Wang Arts & Culture Commissioners Excused Barb Bottini and Nicole Robinson Discussion Topic : 1. Review Short & Long-term Goals in the Strategic Plan The Commission reviewed the Short -Term and Long -Term goals and it was agreed that the Commission is right on track. 2. State of the Arts in Gilroy Discussed during Agenda Item 1. 3. Changing of the Cultural District Chair Scariot stated that she would like to see the Cultural District boundaries changed to include the Arts Center and Downtown Gilroy. This way when applying for grants we would qualify for more monies with a larger Cultural District. Maria De Leon will check with City Administrator Tom Haglund as to the steps required to make such a change. This item will be put on March's agenda. 4. Goals the Commissioners have for the Arts in Gilroy Commissioner Morasca stated that he wants to advocate for getting funding for Public Art by way of getting it included in the General Plan. He feels that should be the Commission's #1 Priority. The other priority is the Cultural District Boundaries being extended. Both these items will be put on March's agenda. 5. Fundraising Cathy Mirelez reported to the Commission that staffing the 4th of July booth was not a fundraising option for them this year. Some suggestions that were brought up were: ➢ Selling Tamales or Ceviche ➢ Request monies from the Gilroy Foundation ($500) for the Large Business and Small Business Awards (Cathy Mirelez will check with Donna Pray.) 6. Research Feasibility of having a few music concerts in the park partnering with other groups Commissioner Morasca stated he would like to see the concerts in the park return to Christmas Hill Park. Staff explained that the concerts' attendance continually dwindled after Fifth Street Live started a few years ago. 7. Summer Outdoor Movie It was suggested that maybe one concert a year as a Special Event would work or a Movie Night. The Gilroy Arts Alliance and the Public Art Committee will be notified about collaborating on a Summer Movie Night at the Gilroy Center for the Arts. 8. Public Art Committee Commissioner Morasca again asked the Commissioners for their assistance in recruiting two (2) individuals for the Public Art Committee. He also would like their help with developing a Financial Plan for the Committee. n a arks, Administrative ecretary Recreation Department
