Discussion Topic :
1. Review Short & Long-term Goals in the Strategic Plan
The Commission reviewed the Short -Term and Long -Term goals and it was agreed that
the Commission is right on track.
2. State of the Arts in Gilroy
Discussed during Agenda Item 1.
3. Changing of the Cultural District
Chair Scariot stated that she would like to see the Cultural District boundaries changed to
include the Arts Center and Downtown Gilroy. This way when applying for grants we
would qualify for more monies with a larger Cultural District.
Maria De Leon will check with City Administrator Tom Haglund as to the steps required
to make such a change. This item will be put on March's agenda.
4. Goals the Commissioners have for the Arts in Gilroy
Commissioner Morasca stated that he wants to advocate for getting funding for Public
Art by way of getting it included in the General Plan. He feels that should be the
Commission's #1 Priority.
The other priority is the Cultural District Boundaries being extended. Both these items
will be put on March's agenda.
5. Fundraising
Cathy Mirelez reported to the Commission that staffing the 4th of July booth was not a
fundraising option for them this year. Some suggestions that were brought up were:
➢ Selling Tamales or Ceviche
➢ Request monies from the Gilroy Foundation ($500) for the Large Business and
Small Business Awards (Cathy Mirelez will check with Donna Pray.)
6. Research Feasibility of having a few music concerts in the park partnering with
other groups
Commissioner Morasca stated he would like to see the concerts in the park return to
Christmas Hill Park. Staff explained that the concerts' attendance continually dwindled
after Fifth Street Live started a few years ago.
7. Summer Outdoor Movie
It was suggested that maybe one concert a year as a Special Event would work or a
Movie Night.
The Gilroy Arts Alliance and the Public Art Committee will be notified about
collaborating on a Summer Movie Night at the Gilroy Center for the Arts.
8. Public Art Committee
Commissioner Morasca again asked the Commissioners for their assistance in recruiting
two (2) individuals for the Public Art Committee. He also would like their help with
developing a Financial Plan for the Committee.
