05/12/2015 Arts and Culture Commission Regular Meeting Adopted 07/14/2015CITY OF GILROY MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE ARTS AND CULTURE COMMISSION 5:30 P.M. May 12, 2015 CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 5:31 p.m. by Chair Scariot. SECRETARY'S REPORT Arts & Culture Commissioners Present: Barbara Bottini, Bruce Morasca, Alma Perez, Mattie Scariot and Peter Wang Arts & Culture Commissioners Excused: Nicole Robinson Arts & Culture Commissioners Absent: Sally Armendariz Christopher High School Student Representative Silva was absent. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion was made by Commissioner Bottini to approve the minutes of the April 14, 2015 regular meeting. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Morasca. The motion carried unanimously with a 5-0-2 vote (Commissioners Armendariz & Robinson were absent). APPROVAL OF AGENDA Motion made by Commissioner Morasca to approve the agenda for May 12, 2015. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Bottini. The motion carried unanimously with a 5-0-2 vote (Commissioners Armendariz & Robinson were absent). None. AWARDS & RECOGNITIONS None. PUBLIC COMMENT None. OLD BUSINESS A. Update on Movie Night in Collaboration with the Public Art Committee and Gilroy Arts Alliance The City of Gilroy Recreation Department will purchase the film, Kubber — PG Version with Robin Williams. The cost is $250. Cathy Mirelez will send the Arts logo electronically to Chair Scariot so flyers can be made up for the event. Mattie Scariot will use her projector to show the movie. B. Fundraising Opportunity — Staffing City Fireworks Booth for One (1) Day Cathy Mirelez informed the Commission that there was an opportunity for them to earn $300 if they staffed the City Fireworks Booth for July 1, 2015. The shifts would be 10:00 a.m. —1:00 p.m.; 1:00 — 5:00 p.m. and 5:00 — 8:00 p.m. Those who agreed to work are Commissioner Bottini and a friend, Chair Scariot and friend and Commissioners Morasca and Wang. C. Annual Arts Roundtable Chair Scariot asked if she could give her thoughts on this agenda item at the June 9, 2015 meeting. D. Selection of a Sub -Committee - Lobbying for the Arts being included in the General Plan The Committee agreed that anyone wishing to participate, short of a quorum, could attend a sub -committee meeting that would take place 30 minutes before the regular meeting. Commissioners Bottini, Morasca and Scariot indicated their interest. A. Interviewing of Public Art Committee Applicants No applicants; therefore no interviews. PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE UPDATE No meeting — lack of quorum. PASEO PROJECT UPDATE Chair Scariot reported that 5 of the 7 panels for the Paseo have been purchased. The Committee is now selling commemorative bricks that will be laid in the Paseo. They are $250 each. You can have 3 lines —15 characters per line. The panels are almost finished. GENERAL PLAN ACTION COMMITTEE UPDATE Commissioner Bottini reported that there will not be another meeting until August 2015. The Committee's recommendations are going before the Planning Commission and then City Council on May 18, 2015. GILROY ARTS ALLIANCE Commissioner Morasca reported the following: ➢ May 9 — June 14 Mixed Media exhibit ➢ May 23 Artist Reception from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. ➢ May 30, Wine Stroll, 2:00 — 6:00 p.m. ➢ Garlic Festival — Commissioner Morasca passed around a sign-up sheet for working with the Melon Heads in Gourmet Alley — cutting up melons STAFF REPORT A. Cultural Arts Programs/Events: We are in the process of planning and coordinating our Summer Cultural Arts offerings (Summer Theater Camp, Piano Keyboarding, Specialty Dance classes — Ballet, Broadway Dance, Hip -Hop & Hula and Canvas Painting classes) B. Museum Projects/Tours/Displays: Local Historical Author's Book Signing and Sale, which took place at the Museum in April. CMUSTOPHER HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORT None. STAFF COMMENTS None. City of Gilroy Planning Commissioner Paul Kloecker was in attendance and informed the Commission about the plans for changing a portion of Tenth Street to Auto Mall Parkway. The preliminary designs before the Planning Commission call for a roadside sculpture, and Commissioner Kloecker asked that this be addressed by the Public Art Committee. Staff will follow up and report to the Committee. Chair Scariot adjourned the meeting at 6:31 p.m. FUTURE MEETING The next regular meeting of the Arts & Culture Commission will be held on Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at 5:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers located at 7351 Rosanna Street, Gilroy, CA 95020.
