10/13/2015 Arts and Culture Commission Regular Meeting Adopted 11/10/2015CITY OF GILROY MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE ARTS AND CULTURE COMMISSION 5:30 P.M. October 13, 2015 CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 5:35 p.m. by Chair Scariot. SECRETARY'S REPORT Arts & Culture Commissioners Present: Barbara Bottini, Janette Contreras, Bruce Morasca, Mattie Scariot and Peter Wang Arts & Culture Commissioners Excused: Alma Perez Arts & Culture Commissioners Absent: Sally Armendariz APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion was made by Vice Chair Morasca to approve the minutes of the September 8, 2015, regular meeting. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Bottini. The motion carried unanimously with a 5-0-2 vote (Commissioners Armendariz and Perez were absent). APPROVAL OF AGENDA Motion was made by Commissioner Wang to approve the agenda for October 13, 2015, with the stated change of order. The motion was seconded by Vice Chair Morasca. The motion carried unanimously with a 5-0-2 vote (Commissioners Armendariz and Perez were absent). INTRODUCTIONS Newly appointed Arts & Culture Commissioner Janette Contreras was introduced. She is a teacher at Christopher High School and has lived in Gilroy approximately two (2) years. She is extremely excited about becoming involved with the Commission and working for the betterment of Gilroy. Also newly appointed as the Christopher High School Representative to the Arts & Culture Commission was Jacob Yoder -Schrock. Jacob is active in the drama program and is the Production Manager for the Catamount Actors Theater and was also a participant in past City of Gilroy shows. Janette and Jacob were warmly welcomed by the Arts & Culture Commissioners. AWARDS & RECOGNITIONS None. PUBLIC COMMENT None. OLD BUSINESS A. Sub -Committee Report on Lobbying for the Arts being included in the General Plan None. NEW BUSINESS A. Interviewing of Public Art Committee Applicants Cindy Sepulveda was interviewed by the Commissioners. Motion was made by Vice Chair Morasca to recommend to the Gilroy City Council that Cindy Sepulveda be appointed to the City of Gilroy Public Art Committee. Motion was seconded by Commissioner Bottini. The motion carried unanimously with a 5-0-2 vote (Commissioners Armendariz and Perez were absent). B. Update on Arts & Culture Commission Annual Presentation to City Council — November 2, 2015 Cathy Mirelez reported that she will be sending notes to Chair Scariot and they will be working on finalizing the PowerPoint and narrative. Ms. Mirelez asked that all Commissioners be present at the November 2nd City Council meeting at 6:00 p.m. to support their Chair and to be recognized. PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE UPDATE Commissioner Morasca reported that the following was discussed at the September meeting: ➢ Unveiling Ceremony for the Library Mural — Thursday, October 29 at 4:30 p.m. — all are invited and encouraged to attend ➢ Public Art Committee's Annual Presentation to City Council was October 5 ➢ Public Art Committee will be hosting a Fund Development Training (Sam Bozzo is the lead on this event) — Arts & Culture Commission and Gilroy Arts Alliance will be invited PASEO PROJECT UPDATE Chair Scariot reported that the panels are complete and have been approved by City Council. Commemorative bricks are still for sale at $250 each. GENERAL PLAN ACTION COMMITTEE UPDATE Commissioner Bottini reported that they tried to meet 2 or 3 times but didn't have a quorum. They will be meeting tomorrow night (October 14) and will have one more meeting in October. Currently, they are reviewing the General Plan language word for word GILROY ARTS ALLIANCE Commissioner Morasca reported on the following: Limelight Theater — new show Always Patsy Cline opening on November 13 Art Show — displaying the religious art of Artist Howard Finster — religious art Developing Strategic Plan Fundraisers Workshop TAPE The Arts Alliance will partner with CARAS for the Dia De Los Muertos event STAFF REPORT A. Cultural Arts Programs/Events: ➢ The Fall production of "HONK! Jr. " closed this past Sunday, October loth. It featured 26 young actors and was directed by Hilary Little, a new contracted Director for the City. ➢ Flyers for the Young Artists Poster Contest were distributed to all Gilroy Schools (public & private) on Monday October 11th. B. Museum Projects/Tours/Displays: None. CHRISTOPHER HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORT CHS Representative Yoder -Schrock reported on the following: ➢ October 6th (small gym at the high school) and 7th (at the Gilroy Presbyterian Church) the Choir gave their annual concerts ➢ On October 1 Ith the band had its Home Show Competition and placed 5th out of 17 ➢ Rehearsals have begun for The Crucible the Advanced drama production — performances begin the second week of December ➢ Senior Play is Appointment with Death by Agatha Christie ➢ Spring Fling (large dance recital) in December COMMISSION COMMENTS (Arts -Related) Commissioner Contreras — attended Honk, it was really great and had a great fusion of dance; she saw Mulan — crowd was really enthusiastic and Rucker Elementary School is putting on the musical Pillar Project (several teams will be performing) October 15 — October 17 in the Multi - Purpose Room Vice Chair Morasca informed the Commissioners that the Great Garlic 5K Run will be held on Saturday, October 24 at the Gilroy Sports Park beginning at 9:00 a.m. This event is sponsored by the City of Gilroy Parks & Recreation Commission and all proceeds benefit the Youth Scholarship Fund.
