CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Arts and Culture Commission was called to order by Chair Mattie
Scariot at: 5:33 p.m.

The Agenda was posted in the public notice cabinet at 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, April 6, 2017.
The Agenda and the March Meeting Packet was posted to the City's website and distributed on
Thursday, April 6, 2017 at 9:42 a.m.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion was made by Commissioner Morasca, seconded by Vice Chair Bottini and carried with a
vote to approve the minutes of the March 14, 2017 regular meeting as written with a vote 7-0-0.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Motion was made by Vice Chair Bottini to approve, seconded by Commissioner Morasca and
carried with a vote to approve the agenda for Tuesday, April 11, 2017 as written with a vote 7-0-
0.
Christina Ruiz — Office Assistant
AWARDS & RECOGNITIONS
Muralist Guillermo Aranda accepted the Monthly Arts Award from the Arts and Culture
Commission. Nominated Commissioner Armendariz, Mr. Aranda is a co-founder of Toltecas de
Aztlan and currently teaches murals to inmates at Salinas Valley State Prison, which was
featured recently in The New York Times.

OLD BUSINESS
Monthly Arts Award - Chair Mattie Seariot
Chair Mattie Scariot asked for nominees for the monthly arts award.
Vice Chair Bottini nominated her dentist, Dr. Escobar, for having various artists on display in her
office. Cultural Arts Supervisor Mirelez nominated Christopher High School teacher Kate Booth,
who recently organized a trip to Moscow for her theatre students.
Motion was made by Bottini, seconded by Commissioner Morasca and carried with a vote to
give Booth the Monthly Arts Award at the May meeting with a vote 7-0-0.
The Commission will form a subcommittee to work on a nomination system to gather
nominations. An idea mentioned was creating a form on the city's arts page to allow for
nominations. The subcommittee will be comprised of Chair Scariot and Commissioner Miguel.
Debrief of Annual Arts and Culture Commission Retreat — Grace Hernandez
Commissioner Hernandez was pleased with the outcomes of the retreat and felt that connecting
the arts to Downtown Gilroy was the commission's primary focus along with expanding public
art and getting more involved with special events as other areas of interest (see her attached
notes). A subcommittee of Commissioner Armendariz, Chair Scariot, and Commissioner
Morasca was formed to further explore these ideas.
Both Chair Scariot and Vice Chair Bottini thought the Commission could have spent more time
at the retreat to further explore these goals. Also, Bottini felt a point of resolution had not been
reached. Commissioner Morasca agreed.
Arts and Culture Commission Roundtable Forum 2017
Commissioner Armendariz, Commissioner Morasca and Chair Scariot have formed a
subcommittee to discuss the details of the upcoming forum.
NEW BUSINESS
Summer Movie Nilzht Financial Sponsorship - Cathy Mirelez
Gilroy Arts Alliance is asking the Arts & Culture Commission for financial support for this
event. Mirelez stated that the cost to show a movie in a public setting costs about $250.00-$350.
00. Chair Scariot stated that she would get more information on exactly what and how much
financial help the Gilroy Arts Alliance is asking for and bring her findings back to the next
meeting.
Selection of General Planning Advisory Committee (GPAC) Representative — .
Vice Chair Bottini will continue to serve as a representative from the Arts and Culture
Commission to the GPAC.
PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE (PAC) — Commissioner Bruce Morasca
Commissioner Morasca mentioned that the PAC held their annual retreat on March 22, 2017.
The Committee discussed various locations for public art to be displayed in Downtown Gilroy, at
Christmas Hill Park, the Gilroy library and in the area between the library and city hall.
PASEO PROJECT — Chair L. Mattie Scariot
Chair Scariot reported that the unveiling of the Pasco Project will occur on May 20, 2017.
GILROY ARTS ALLIANCE - Commissioner Bruce Morasca
Commissioner Morasca reported that Youth Art Exhibit at the Gilroy Arts Alliance will run from
April 1- May 7. Vice Chair Bottini was impressed with the art work.
STAFF REPORT
Cultural Arts Programs/Events — Cathy Mirelez
Mirelez reported that the Recreation Summer Guide was mailed out to Gilroy residents.
Museum Projects/Tours/Displays - Cathy
Mirelez reported that there is a historical display honoring the local Chinese population in the
City Hall Gallery.

Gilroy Early College Academy (GECA) Student Representative Report
