CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Arts and Culture Commission was called to order by Vice Chair
Barbara Bottini at 5:31 p.m.

SECRETARY'S REPORT
Packet was posted on the City's website on Friday, September 8, 2017 at 4:30 p.m. and the
Agenda was posted in the Notice cabinet on Friday, September 8, 2017 at 4:45 p.m.
ROLL CALL
Commissioners Present: Vice Chair Barbara Bottini, Commissioner Bruce Morasca,
Commissioner Grace Hernandez, Commissioner Tamura Miguel and Commissioner Suzanne
Wood. Chair Mattie Scariot arrived at 5:45 p.m.
Commissioners Absent: Commissioner Sally Armendariz-excused
Also Present: Recreation Manager Adam Henig
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion was made by Commissioner Morasca, seconded by Commissioner Wood and
carried with a vote to approve the June 29, 2017 special meeting minutes with a vote of 5-0-
0.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Tamara Miguel made one correction to the minutes regarding the misspelling of CARAS.
Motion was made by Commissioner Morasca, seconded by Commissioner Hernandez and
carried with a vote to approve the amended minutes of July 11, 2017 minutes with a vote of
5-0-0.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Recreation Manager Henig suggested moving along to Old Business Item A as Chair Scariot was
running late and wanted to present on the PowerPoint presentation.
Motion was made by Commissioner Morasca to begin with Old Business, seconded by
Commissioner Miguel and carried with a vote to approve the Agenda with a vote of 5-0-0.
Henig introduced Angie Guerra, the new recording secretary for the commission and announced
the retirement of Theresa Hernandez.

None
OLD BUSINESS
Monthly Arts Award Nomination Process
Commissioner Hernandez reported about Monthly Arts Award nomination form, which is now
on the ACC web page. There is also a link for both the nomination form and the past award
winners (Recreation Department's Pacebook page). Discussion followed and there will be a few
modifications to the form, which Honig will edit. Henig will also add his contact information and
when any nominations come in, he will add the names to the agenda. Vice Chair Bottini asked if
the commissioners could also use the nomination form. Discussion followed and the
commissioners agreed that they should also use the nomination form on the ACC Website.
Motion was made by Commissioner Morasca, seconded by Commissioner Wood and
carried with a vote 5-0-0 to accept the form and nomination process as amended in the
meeting.
Arts and Culture Commission Roundtable Forum 2017 — Chair Scariot
Honig reported that there are two possible dates for the ACC Roundtable, November 2 or
November 8. It will be held at the Gilroy Center for the Arts. Chair Scariot asked if there was
enough time to prepare. Discussion followed and the commissioners discussed moving the
roundtable to late January to better prepare. Scariot suggested that the commissioners look over
the facility list and add to it and think of people they'd like to invite. Adam will resend the list of
facilities and look into having the Center for the Arts host the forum in late January. He will
report back at the next meeting.
GPAC UPDATE — Vice Chair Bottini
Bottini informed commissioners that the last GPAC meeting was held in August. During the
meeting, developers presented to the committee and discussed the feasibility of building in
Gilroy. The bottom line, according to Bottini, it is too expensive. There was another
presentation by panel who discussed the development of downtown. The next meeting is
scheduled for September 28.
NEW BUSINESS
Arts and Culture Commission Presentation — Chair Scariot
Chair Scariot went over the planned presentation to City Council on Monday, September 18.
Scariot went through her slideshow and hoped all the commissioners would be able to attend the
meeting.
PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE UPDATE — Commissioner Bruce Morasca
Morasca stated that there was no meeting last month, but he (along with Judy and Sam Bozzo)
visited the new mural that was painted on the exterior wall near the Arts Alliance building.

Henig also reported The Gilroy Arts Alliance in conjunction with the City of Gilroy sent out a
RFP to find out how much it would cost to upgrade the Center for the Arts. The center currently
has a capacity of 49 people. The city is currently soliciting bids. Henig stated that a committee
will be formed and comprised of Director Maria Leon, Kevin Heath, a city engineer and himself.
Henig also reported that Commissioner Armendariz asked him to invite commissioners to the
Tamale Festival which will be held on Sunday, September 24 in downtown Gilroy.
Lastly, Henig informed the commissioners to be sure to set their city email. Henig will soon stop
sending emails to their non -city accounts.

COMMISSION COMMENTS (Arts -Related)
Bottini reports that the Porch Fest plans have been finalized and will be held on Saturday,
September 16 from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. on Hanna St. between 3 d and 6`h Street. The
programs were printed in both local newspapers and will be handed out the day of the event.
Miguel mentioned there is a new art gallery in Gilroy called Moya Art Gallery and Studio.

Summer Recap:
Our annual Summer of.Art classes for grades.5 — 8 were held ]une.19 through July
14. 'Classes included two weeks of video and.and thrce.art classes over two weeks.
Ony instructors Susan Graeser, RIrk.Cbarvet and 152 West productions reported
successful. classes, Ricks class was the largest number of kids we've had.
The Family Outdoor Movie Nights brought families to the.Green, despite a couple of
hotevenings. Five movies were chosen. and Gilroy Foundation partnered with us to
help with the costs of movie fees.. Gilroy Arts Alliance purchased all newprojection
and speaker equipmont.to ensure a quality experience for our community. Gilroy
Downtown Business Assoclatiou,.Gilroy,Dispatch and otherlocal patrons also
sponsored the event. The families in attendance complimented the choice of movies
and thanked us forhosting the family friendly event; Thankyou to ACC
Commissioners for volunteering on July M to operate thecraft table.
Movie nights in 2018 will total four nights, .anti will be split between June and'
August, as the Center is booked on the first three Friday nights in July next year, We
also found we had lower attendance in Judy this year (our first year with July dates).
Sentember through December:
Our current. exhibit, Intuitive Watercolor Installation: Reconstructing the
Landscape", is the first of its kind at the Center. It has included a live intuitive
painting experience by local artist, and GAA Board President, Elissa Nesheim. The
exhibit Is actually being created in the gallery with Elissa, our first Resident Artist,
The Fall drama "The Outgoing Tide" opened at Limelight Actors Theater, and has
received exceptional reviews. Their holiday comedy opens in November.
We are working on our annual Dia de los Muertos Offrenda Exhibit, participating in
the Gil'oy.Beer Crawl in October and hosting a Holiday Artists Boutique in
December. We have also partnered with Gilroy Downtown Business Association,
once again, on their new Sidewalk Sale Day. They will host local vendors and artists
at the Center on September 30th.
201.8 Exhibits:
The 2018 schedule has been approved and work Is already underway on the first
two exhibits of the new year. In January, the exhibit will feature the art of women in
the criminal justice system at Elmwood. February will be dedicated to our fourth
annual Black History Month Exhibit.

Recreation Department Staff Report:
Cultural Arts & Museum. update
• Our Kids Discover Arts event, which was held this past Saturday, was attended by 290
children (accompanied by a parent), ages 5 —11 years, Those in attendance experienced
18 different "hands-on" arts workshops led by local artists from our community. 77
additional volunteers contributed 560'community service hours to help make this event a
success, as well. Very special thanks to the Gilroy Rotary Club and the Sunrise Rotary
Club for their continued financial support!
• Cultural Arts classes: April Valenzuela Gaylord is a new dance instructor who will be
teaching ballet for fitness and jazz for adults along with jazz, creative dance and ballet for
youth and teens,
• The Museum has not met during August so I should have something to report in October,
• Auditions for the fall children's theater play Into the Woods took place Saturday,
September 9"'. The play, under the direction of Colleen Blanchard, will have 10
performances starting on Friday, November I0`h at 7:00 p.m. at the Gilroy high School
theater. Tickets are $10 and the other nine performance dates are listed on page 13 of the
fall Activity Guide.
• Recreation staff is beghming work on the 2018 Winter/Spring Activity Guide with a
deadline of September 18rh for class submittals.
