OLD BUSINESS
A. Bike Map Update – Don
Don reported that he compiled the Commission’s suggested changes and forwarded them to Eureka
Cartography, the mapping company. Don asked them to update the electronic copy and to give him a
copy of the printable map for this meeting. Unfortunately, Don has not received a printable copy from
them in time for tonight’s meeting.
When the map company sends Don a PDF version of the map he will forward it to the Commissioners
so that they will have time to review the map before the July Meeting.
Libby asked Don the cost of producing the map? Don told the Commissioners that the total project
cost to develop the electronic map and print at least 10,000 copies of the map was $15,000.00. This
cost was covered by a grant received from Santa Clara County.
Tony asked what the target date is to have the map complete. Don told the Commission that the grant
ends at the end of September and his goal is to have the map published before the grant ends.
Scott asked the Commissioners to be sure to review the map as soon as they receive it and be ready
to discuss it at the July meeting.
B. Walkable Cities – Libby
Libby told the Commission that in a report on health vs. obesity in Santa Clara County, the City of
Gilroy ranked last. Libby reported that Santa Clara County has a health component in there General
plan and Libby would like to see the City of Gilroy adopt this component into the City’s General Plan.
Don told the Commission that the Planning Department is in the very early stages of reviewing the
City’s General Plan. Don will find out what the process is for the BPC to propose that a health
component be included in the City of Gilroy’s general plan.
Don suggested that the Commissioners go out into the Community to find examples of walkable
areas in the City. Also, the Commissioners should identify areas which are not very pedestrian
friendly. Once the Commission has this information they can bring this walkablility issue to the
attention of the City Council.
Scott would like all of the Commissioners to read the City’s General Plan for 2020.
Libby will bring the next section of walkable cities information to the next meeting.

C. Share the Road Signs Based on LAB Next Steps – Don
Don made contact with a Bicycle expert, Michelle DeRobertis, at VTA to get some opinions on
signage.
The bicycle expert told Don that she recommends the “sharrows” pavement marking. Michelle does
not like to see a lot of signs on poles because she doesn’t feel they are as effective. VTA is looking
at the “may use full lane” in the urban areas and the “share the road” signs in the rural area.
Don prefers the green “Bike Route” signs and the signs that say “May Use Full Lane’.
Don shared a packet with the Commission that showed different signs that are used for bike lanes.
Scott and Tony agreed with Don’s recommendation of using the “sharrows” marking on the
pavement, the “may use full lane” sign and the “Bike Route” sign.
Don will discuss this request with Operation’s staff. Don will modify the work order for Sixth Street.
D. Garlic Festival Bike Parking Lot – Tony
Tony reported that the Garlic Festival already has a group that is going to operate the bicycle parking
lot at the Garlic Festival.
Tony will review this item next year for the Bicycle Pedestrian Commission.
