LIBRARY COMMISSION MEETING
7:00 P.M.
Wednesday, August 8, 2012
CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Library Commission was called to order by Chair Smith (Carol) at
7: 08 p.m, in the Gilroy Library Meeting Room, 350 W. 6th Street Gilroy, California.
SECRETARY'S REPORT
All five commissioners were present.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion by Commissioner Taylor and seconded by Commissioner Smith (Hugh) to
approve the minutes of July 11, 2012.
Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Motion by Commissioner Smith (Hugh) and seconded by Commissioner Taylor to
approve the Agenda of August 8, 2012.
Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.
INTRODUCTIONS
Chair Smith re- introduced Kay Spencer, who visited a previous meeting, and welcomed her
officially as a Library Commissioner.
PRESENTATIONS
None.
PUBLIC PARTICIPATION
None.
NEW BUSINESS
A. Discussion of Donor Recognition for the New Library
Discussion will occur at a later date.
LIBRARY REPORTS
Acting County Librarian, Nancy Howe
Website and New Logo — The Library will launch a new website on August 15, 2012. The
website has been re- designed to have afresh, clean look and will be much easier to maintain.
The Library will continue with a set of system -wide programs on democracy that will carry over
into fall.
At the special meeting on Monday, the Library approved a re -bid of the construction project for
the new Library Administration Offices.
The next regular JPA Board meeting will be held in October.
City Librarian, Lani Yoshimura
Personnel — Library page Denise Leverton remains on medical leave. Gilroy Library will
conduct interviews for extra -help page next week, and will interview Children's Supervising
Librarian candidates soon.
Patrons — In the past, an average of 1,000 patrons per day visited the Gilroy Library, but during .
the first month of operation in the new facility, circulation rose 30.4% and the gate count was
more than 110% higher than in May 2011. Overall circulation dropped 3.2% during FY11 -12:
however, the library was also closed for 6 weeks for relocation to the new library during that
time. During May 2012, more than 1,000 new library cards were issued to Gilroy residents.
Summer Reading Club.— Signups included 620 Children, 70 Teens and. 50 Adults. Not many
members kept track of their reading online, which is consistent with past participation.
New Programs /Events —
Vamos a Leer— Saturday, August 25, 2012 (Noon— l :00pm).
Univision Radio San Francisco has been visiting local libraries to promote literacy through its
outreach program for the past 8 years. This event will feature radio personality Jose Luis
Gonzalez "El Zorro," who shows parents the importance of their involvement in their children's
educational development and encourages reading through an interactive story time, games and
prizes.
Reading Buddies — TBA.
This program gives children in first through fourth grade an opportunity to practice .reading
aloud to a therapy animal and develop confidence in their own skills. Furry Friends is a
volunteer organization that brings the healing power of animals to the community.
Play & Learn Island — August - December, 2012
Gilroy Library has received a small grant from Rancho Cucamonga Library to borrow their Play
and Learn Island unit, which was embraced with great enthusiasm during Storytime. The theme
that day happened to be dinosaurs, and coincidentally, the unit contained a big bag of them.
Also in the unit are other plastic shapes and letters, some of which are magnetic and can be
stuck to the sides of the unit. The children can also play with the plastic shapes on the
removable heavy wooden cover of the sandbox when it is not in use.
Friends of the Gilroy Library — The "Friends" held their first book sale in the new facility in
July. New and old members came to help. The earnings for the day were $550.
Circulation — The June 2012 circulation at Gilroy Library increased by 14,130 items over that of
June 2011. The Gate count in June 2012 was 32,926 compared to 21,415 in June 2011.
Pro duns — The Library held 41 Adult, Teen, and Children's programs with a total attendance
of 1,764 people in June.

FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS
Chair Smith was asked by a citizen what the Library Commission was doing to honor Kathleen
Smith. Discussion of possibilities will occur at the next meeting.

Chair Smith (Carol) adjourned the meeting at 7:38 p.m.

August 8, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. in the Gilroy Library Meeting Room, 350 W. 6th Street,
