Wednesday, October 10, 2012 CALL TO ORDER The regular meeting of the Library Commission was called to order by Chair Smith (Carol) at 7: 06 p.m. in the Gilroy Library Meeting Room, 350 W. 6th Street Gilroy, California. SECRETARY'S REPORT All five commissioners were present. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion by Commissioner Taylor and seconded by Commissioner Smith (Hugh) to approve the minutes of September 12, 2012. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Motion by Commissioner Smith (Hugh) and seconded by Commissioner Armenta to approve the Agenda of October 10, 2012. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered. INTRODUCTIONS None. PRESENTATIONS None. PUBLIC PARTICIPATION None. NEW BUSINESS A. Discussion of Donor Recognition for the New Library Nancy Howe found 2 tree -theme designs in library brochures that she thought the Commission might be interested in. The cost would be in the neighborhood of $5,000. She also found photos for donor ideas on meeting room doors that she will send to Lani. B. Discussion of Possible Ways for Library Commission to Honor Deceased Members Chair Smith spoke with Shawna Freels, and it was decided that this item will be discussed at a later date after a committee is formed and a clear naming policy can be obtained. LIBRARY REPORTS County Librarian, Nancy Howe Friends and Commissioners Forum — The annual Santa Clara County Library Friends, Foundation, Endowment, and Commission Forum will be held on February 9, 2013 from 8:45 a.m. to noon (lunch included) at the Library administration building, 14600 Winchester Blvd in Los Gatos. The timely theme for this year will be `Sharing the Library's Story'. Joint Powers Authority Board — The JPA will meet twice in October. The Board awarded the construction bid for the new administrative building at the special meeting on October 9. The last regularly scheduled meeting of the calendar year is October 25. The tentative agenda includes the presentation of the report from the City and County Managers Task Force regarding the Library District's Platform and Formula Funding. This report and recommendations are the result of several months of detailed review. Also on the agenda will be recommended changes to the Bylaws, Nominating Committee recommendations and vote on 2013 officers, report from the Election Subcommittee and the Year -end Financial Report. Silicon Valley Reads 2013 — Two books that describe the "invisible wounds of war" have been selected for Silicon Valley Reads 2013. The Long Walk by Brian Castner and Minefields of the Heart by Sue Diaz will be the focus of dozens of free public programs and discussions, starting with a kick -off event on January 30 at 7:30 p.m. at the Heritage Theatre in Campbell. Zinio — Santa Clara County Library District is delighted to announce its latest digital service: free downloadable magazines. Access began October 1 and is free to all Santa C1ara'County Library District cardholders. Zinio replicates the full color version of print magazines in a variety of subjects, including: business and finance, cooking, fashion and style, gardening, health and fitness, news and current affairs, and a lot more. eNewsletter — Beginning with the September inaugural edition, the library will publish a monthly e- newsletter that will be available on our website as well as through email subscription. California Reads Contests — As a part of the California Reads: Searching for Democracy project, children and teens are invited to participate in contests exploring the meaning of Arnerican Democracy through art and photography. Children in grades K -8 are invited to submit original drawings, paintings, collages, or photos in the art contest, while teens are asked to enter digital photography. Digital Storytime: Tablet Tales — Innovative family story time combining digital apps and eBooks with traditional story time activities will be offered at the following Libraries: Campbell (Oct. 9, 16 & 30 at 7:15 p.m.), Morgan Hill (Nov. 28, Dec. 5, 12 & 19 at 7:00 p.m.), Cupertino (Oct. 23 at 7:00 p.m.) and Los Altos (Nov. 8 at 7:00 p.m.). City Librarian, Lani Yoshimura Personnel — Library page Denise Leverton remains on medical leave. Sharon Kelly has been hired as the new Gilroy Library Children's Supervising Librarian, and will start on November 6. Sharon started as a page at the Campbell Library in the late 1970's. She later earned her master's degree in library science and worked for the County Library as a Librarian 1 /11, and later as Children's Program Librarian at Alum Rock Library. She moved into school libraries during the budget crisis in the early 1990's, and currently works as a school librarian and Page 2 of 3 teaches a library skills class at West Valley College. The Library thanks Diana Lara for all her help during this very difficult year of moving and transition. She provided stability to the Gilroy Library children's program and has been well -liked by patrons and staff. FRIENDS of the Gilroy Library — The Friends has reorganized and incorporated after all these years. The group held its first membership meeting and also its first Board meeting this month, The Friends will continue their book sales thanks to the continuing direction and guidance of Isabel Jewell. Other programs may include helping the library with deliveries to the homebound. September Programs — Besides ongoing storytimes (including bi- lingual and baby storytimes), book club meetings, teen movies, ESL conversation club meetings, and the writers' group, there will be: Day of the Dead celebration (Oct. 23) Fall Festival including Costume Parade for Children, Day of the Dead Sugar Skull activity for middle school and drop -in craft activities (Oct. 27) Flash mob dance (Oct. 27 at 4:15pm in the lobby) COMMISSION COMMENTS Commissioner Taylor mentioned that South Valley Community Church is renting the old temporary library building on Monterey Street for community outreach programs. STAFF COMMENTS None, FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS Item A, Discussion of Donor Recognition, will remain on the Agenda.
