CALL TO- ORDER
The regular meeting of the Library Commission was called to order by Vice -Chair Spencer at
7: 01 p.m. in the Gilroy Library Meeting Room, 350 W. 6th Street Gilroy, California.
SECRETARY'S REPORT
Three commissioners were present. Commissioners Hugh and Carol Smith were excused.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion made by Commissioner Cooper to approve the minutes of September 11, 2013.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA

OLD BUSINESS
A. Discussion of Donor Recognition for the New Library
This item will be discussed in greater detail when more information is available.
B. Discussion of Gilroy Library Commission Work Plan
This item will be tabled until more information is available from Lani Yoshimura.

The next Santa Clara County Library District Joint Powers Authority {JPA) meeting will be
Thursday, October 24 at 1:30pin at the Administration Office at 14600 Winchester Blvd. in Los
Gatos. The agenda will include an end -of -year financial report for the fiscal year ending on
June 30, 2013, election of 2014 JPA officers and presentation of the ten -year Capital
Improvement Plan. The JPA Finance Committee will meet on October 8 at 11:00. Both
meetings are open to the public.
The 2014 Friends, Commissioners, Foundation and Endowment members Forum will be held
on Saturday, February 1 from 9:00am to 12:00pm. The Forum, which brings together library
volunteers from across the District, will be held at the new Services and Support Center in
Campbell.
The Library will start offering TreeHouse, a free interactive online technology coursework
series, to patrons in late October. The courses range from Programming and Coding to Web
Design and Small Business Development: The free TreeHouse program boasts over 1,000 video
courses, and is refreshed and updated continuously with the latest in web technology. Students
have an opportunity to develop skills that are currently in demand by utilizing TreeHouse
curriculum. Skills such as building iPhone or Android apps or developing creative and
interactive websites provide useful assets to course participants, allowing them to become more
competitive in job searches and potentially increasing chances for successful job placement. As
life becomes increasingly digital, knowing how to code has become crucial in determining
employability. Online technology education provider TreeHouse has launched a subscription -
based web service that will help patrons land their next dream job or build their startup idea by
teaching them cutting -edge programming skills. The step -by -step video courses and training
exercises are curriculum -based and allow patrons to start at the beginning of a course (like
Building an iPad App's and progress at their own pace.
The 2013 Summer Reading program, offered at all libraries and for all ages, ended with 12,853
participants. This was an increase of 67% over summer, 2012.
Gayathri Kanth, who has served as the Community Librarian at the Saratoga Library for the
past 3 years, is the new Community Librarian of the Cupertino Library. Gayathri worked as a
librarian in Cupertino before working at- Saratoga. Jane Cronkhite, who served as Community
Librarian in Los Altos for 3 years, will become-the Community Librarian 'at Campbell. The
Library is delighted to have their experienced and talented staff members take on new
assignments and challenges. Recruitment for the Community Librarian positions for Saratoga
and Los Altos are underway. ,
Gilroy Community Library October 2013 Facility Status Report:
PENDING:
User Experience — Way finding: Martinelli Environmental Graphics (the signage contractor)
has completed all punch list work. Scope of work for additional remaining modifications has
been completed and request for quote was sent last Wednesday.
Li tin : Lani has provided a list of lighting fixtures not working. Library Administration is
obtaining list of bulb types needed for purchase and installation. To improve illumination at the
Circulation Desk and adjacent areas, the Library has funded $5,000 for a consultant and
10,000 for illumination. The scope of work is being developed.
Teen Furniture: Vandalized furniture was removed. Installation of shelving and purchase of
replacement furniture is being scheduled.
Elevator: The State completed annual inspection and quarterly maintenance services have been
scheduled.

Windows/Doors: The contractor has checked every door, made necessary adjustment and
repairs, and ordered pneumatic door closers for installation this week. The library is checking
with contractors on inoperable upper windows in the southwest comer of the building, and -
scheduling a locksmith contractor to add hardware to patio doors so they can stay unlocked
during regular business hours.
AN: Library. IT will contact contractor next week to assist with Community Room A/V
repairs. The Library is still checking with Nova Partners on the status of the Smart Board for
the Training Room.
Pigeon Miti agtion: The City of Gilroy paid for mitigation of pigeon droppings and installation
of bird -proof netting on the Library roof. The contractor has come out twice for re- inspection
and minor corrections, and is being contacted again for more bird -proof installations above the
plaza entrance and on roof -top outside of existing netting.
COMPLETED : -
HVAC: Everything is working. The warranty is extended through April 15, 2014.
BMS Training: Staff was trained on BMS. The Library signed the quarterly BMS maintenance
contract with Automated Control Engineers.
Wi -Fi: The Wi -Fi was upgraded.
