LIBRARY COMMISSION MEETING

CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Library Commission was called to order by Chair Smith (Carol) at
7: 03 p.m. in the Gilroy Library Meeting Room, 350 W. 6th Street Gilroy, California.
SECRETARY'S REPORT
All five commissioners were present.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion made by Commissioner Taylor to approve the minutes of January 8, 2014.
Motion was seconded by Commissioner Spencer.
Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Motion made by Commissioner Spencer to approve the agenda of February 12, 2014.
Motion was seconded by Commissioner Taylor.
Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.
INTRODUCTIONS
Lam Yoshimura introduced Robert Baird, the new Library Security Guard, to the Commission.

OLD. BUSINESS
A. Discussion of Donor Recognition for the New Library
This item will be discussed in greater detail when more information is available.
B. Discussion of Gilroy Library Commission Work Plan
This item will be tabled until more information is available from Lani Yoshimura.
NEW BUSINESS
A. Election of 2014 Chair and Vice -Chair
Commissioner Smith (Carol) nominated Commissioner Spencer as Chair ,of the
Library Commission for 2014. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.
Commissioner Spencer nominated Commissioner Smith (Carol) as Vice -Chair of
the Library Commission for 2014. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.
County Librarian, Nanev Howe
The California Public Library Advocates (CPLA) will hold their spring 2014 Northern
California Workshop on Saturday, March 22 from 8:30 — 1:00 at the Castro Valley Public
Library. This annual event is designed for supporters of California Public Libraries, including
Trustees, Commissioners, Friends, and Foundations. This year's workshop will showcase
examples of what can be . accomplished when the library community advocates together.
Speakers include Acting State Librarian Gerald Mcginnity, California Library Association
President Deborah Doyle, and guests from the libraries of Oakland, Pacifica, and Sacramento.
County Librarian Nancy Howe will be on the agenda to discuss Santa Clara County Library
District's election experience, in a talk titled "Developing Strategic Partnerships to Win
Elections ".
The Library Welcome Brochures have been updated and printed. They are available in English,
Spanish, Chinese, and Vietnamese.
The Reading Program offers free one- on-one tutoring to English - speaking adults by matching
them with patierit volunteers. Tutors will spend two hours per week helping one student
improve his or her reading, writing and comprehension skills. Students set goals related to their
professional careers or personal goals. More information about the Reading Program can be

STAFF COMMENTS
A Payment Request has been submitted to the City Finance Department by Recording Secretary
Lynne Conrotto for the Commissioners annual membership to CPLA (California Public LibraryAdvocates).

FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS
Items A & B will remain on the agenda. Election of officers for 2014 will be added to the
agenda for the February 12, 2014 meeting.
Commissioner Spencer would like to discuss the 2014 Library Commission Meeting Schedule
at the next meeting on March 12, 2014.

Chair Smith adjourned the meeting at 7:35 p.m.
