LIBRARY COMMISSION MEETING

CALL TO ORDER
The regular meeting of the Library Commission was called to order by Chair Spencer at
7: 07 p.m. in the Gilroy Library Meeting Room, 350 W. 6th Street in Gilroy, Califomia.
SECRETARY'S REPORT
All five commissioners were present.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion made by Commissioner Smith (Carol) to approve the minutes of June 11, 2014.
Motion was seconded by Commissioner Cooper.
Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Motion made by Commissioner Cooper to approve the agenda of August. 13, 2014. Motion
was seconded by Commissioner Smith (Carol)..

INTRODUCTIONS
Chair Spencer welcomed Parks and Recreation Commissioner Julie Garcia, who visits the
Library Commission meetings periodically.
PRESENTATIONS
None.
PUBLIC PARTICIPATION
Julie Garcia handed out a flyer for the Frozen Yogurt fundraiser that the Parks and Recreation
Commission will sponsor. On Friday, August 29, 2014, Fro -Yo Fever will donate 20% of the
proceeds from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. to the Gilroy Recreation Youth Scholarship Fund. Ms.
Garcia said that the Kids Triathlon in July was a big success, and the 5K Great Garlic
FUNdraiser will be in October.
NEW BUSINESS
A. :Discussion of Library Commission Work Plan
Chair Spencer informed Julie Garcia about the idea of having a bicycle safety program
at the Gilroy Library to be sponsored by the Library Commission. One suggestion is to
have a 2 -part program; first in a classroom setting with a video, and then outdoors.

SCCLD 100 -Year Anniversary Kick -off — SCCLD staff, volunteers and local residents will
attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the "greatest number of people to
simultaneously balance a book on their heads at a single venue while walking 5 meters (16.4
feet)." The event will take place on Saturday, September 61h at 9:00 a.m. in the Saratoga Library
parking lot. The target is to get 1,200 people to participate. The current world record was set in
the Philippines in 2008 by 939 people. Please pre - register at: http : / /www.scci.org /worldrecord.
Summer Writing Project — Santa Clara County Library District (SCCL) has joined forces with
JukePop, Inc. and Black Hill Press to promote and support writing and reading with the launch
of the Summer Writing Project. Information can be found at: www.sccl.org/SummerWriting.
A collaborative effort to identify up- and - coming literary talent, the Summer Writing Project
provides aspiring authors with an opportunity to create novellas (a written, fictional narrative
normally longer than a short story but shorter than a novel) and submit these stories one chapter
at a time for immediate quantitative and qualitative feedback from readers.
Writers are encouraged to create novellas and submit chapters via jukepop.com. Novellas
should be 10,000 to 30,000 words in length, although compelling characters and evocative
content are deemed more important than work count. Novellas will be featured on the SCCLD
website based on JukePop, Inc. reader analytics (retention + reading time).
JukePop, Inc. is excited to bring this project to a community of readers, writers and library
users," stated Jerry Fan, Founder and CEO of JukePop, Inc. "It's really simple. The Summer
Writing Project benefits the community, is free for writers to join, and is reinventing Santa
Clara County Library District's role in this new publishing era."
Writers eighteen and older are invited to submit their stories to this year's Summer Writing
Project. After the contest ends on August 31, 2014, Black Hill Press will select three novellas
from submitted entries and publish them in a special Summer YVriting Project collection with
cover artwork by noted artist Jeannie Phan. In addition, JukePop, Inc. and Black Hill Press will
promote contestants' serial eBook works to public libraries throughout California.
New Online Services Now Available
The Database Committee (composed of librarians from each library) reviews, evaluates, and
selects the collection of online services and products that will be purchased each year.
Beginning July 1, new services include:
The Library is dropping Mango Language and adding Pronunciator: This change will benefit
patrons with the. ability to download the phrasebooks, the focus on business as well as travel,
and twenty more languages.
Universal Class — With over 500 classes, the scope ranges from "Cake. Decorating" to "Project
Management," as well as Continuing Education Unit (CEI) credits for eligible courses with
certification of completion. Patrons interact with a real instructor via email and opt -in to social
networking with other students from around the world. Patrons may enroll in up to five courses
during any period and work on their course at their own pace., They have up to six months to
complete the course. Patrons access their courses and complete assignments anytime (day or
night), online through any computer or device browser with an internet connection.

PressDisplay — This digital news resource provides access to over 2,000 well -known
newspapers and magazines including: the Washington Post, Business Traveler, and Forbes
Daily - a vast range of local, regional, and international publications with enhanced digital
content.
National Geographic Magazine — This resource brings together a complete archive of
National Geographic magazine (every page, every issue), along with a cross - searchable
collection of National Geographic books, maps, images, and videos.

Commissioners. See attached reports.
