08/21/2012 Parks and Recreation Commission Regular Meeting Adopted 09/18/2012CITY OF GILROY MINUTES OF THE REGULAR PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING 6:00 P.M. Tuesday, August 212012 CALL ORDER The regular meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission was called to order by Chair McHenry at 6:04 p.m. at City Council Chambers, 7351 Rosanna Street, Gilroy, California. SECRETARY'S REPORT All Commissioners were present (Commissioner Garcia 6:11 p.m.) except Commissioner Enriquez who was absent. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Motion made by Commissioner Kloecker to approve the minutes of July 17, 2012. Motion was seconded by Commissioner Scheel. Bearing no objections, it was so ordered. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Motion made by Vice Chair Berry to approve the agenda for August 21, 2012. Motion was seconded by Commissioner Scheel. Hearing no objections, it was so ordered. INTRODUCTIONS None. AWARDS/RECOGNITIONS None. PUBLIC COMMENT None. OLD BUSINESS A. Update on Great Garlic 5K FUNdraiser - October 27, 2012 Vice Chair Berry reported that the sub - committee will be meeting right after the Commission's meeting. Plans are going well. There are a few participants already registered. B. Update on Raising Funds for Improving the Las Animas Veterans Dog Park Commissioner Enriquez was not present. This will be kept on the agenda for September. C. Review & Comments Re: Parks & Recreation Commission's Annual Presentation to City Council — 8/6/12 Chair McHenry reported that the report was well received by Council. He thanked Judy Mireles- Janisch and Maria De Leon for their work on the report. D. Final Planning for Staff Appreciation Event — September 20, 2012, 8 :30 a.m. Commissioners will arrive at 8:00 a.m. to set up. The food/drink items will be: Donuts Moe will bring), Fruit & Banana Bread (Brittany will bring), Orange Juice (Rebecca will bring), Coffee (Terrie will bring), strawberries (Paul will bring), Pastries (Julie will bring), Bagels & Cream Cheese (Robert will be asked to bring) and Guacamole (Sondra will bring). Everyone should bring enough for 20 people. E. Update on Restaurant Fundraiser Vice Chair Berry reported that the fundraiser will be on Wednesday, October 3'd — all day long. Black Bear asked that good advertisement be done for the event. Judy Mireles- Janisch showed the Commission a "mock" flier. It will be "tweaked" and shown to the manager for approval. The percentage that the Commission will receive is 10 %. The flier does not need to be presented; participants just need to state that they are there for the City of Gilroy Recreation Scholarship Fund fundraiser. F. Final Planning for Annual Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting — Miller Park - Tuesday, September 18th 6:00 p.m. The following will be brought for the meeting in the park: hot dogs (Maria), hot dog buns (Paul), guacamole (Sondra), fruit (Julie), ketchup & mustard (Brittany), chips Rebecca), sodas (Terrie & Paul). Staff will bring the grill if the park does not have one. Chair McHenry will check on that. NEW BUSINESS None. PROGRAM UPDATES Recreation: See attached report. Operations: None, COMMITTEE REPORTS Bicycle Pedestrian Commission None. Gang Task Force None. Public Art Committee None. 2 Senior Center Advisory Board Commissioner Kloecker attended their August meeting. They will be holding a Spaghetti Dinner on Friday, September 21st from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Senior Center. Tickets are $7.00 and he has them. Take out is available or you can eat in the dining room. Youth Commission None. The Commission does not meet in the summer months. COMMISSION COMMENTS Commissioner Garcia reported that she is getting a whole new, positive view of the city by talking to visitors at Gilroy Gardens and serving on the Commission. She is very glad that she decided to volunteer. Commissioner Kloecker also stated that he gets very positive feedback from those out -of= towners who go to Gilroy Gardens as well. Vice Chair Berry reported that she cleaned Miller Park (lots of cigarette butts). Chair McHenry reported that the presentation to Council went well. He is also looking forward to the meeting in the park. STAFF COMMENTS Maria De Leon informed the Commission that on Monday, September 17 she will be giving a staff report to the City Council regarding more information on the Naming/Renaming Policy for the City. This is a result of a request made to Council to rename the Youth Center the John Garcia Youth Center. Also, at a future meeting she will be presenting the results of the independent evaluation being done of the South Valley Middle School pool. Ms. De Leon stated that the Recreation Department staff did an amazing job this summer and they are now into fall activities.
