CALL ORDER
The regular meeting of the Parks and Recreation. Commission was called to order by Vice Chair
Garcia at 6 :02 p.m.

All Commissioners were present except Chair

APPROVAL -OF MINUTES
Motion made by Commissioner Berry to approve the minutes of June 17, 2014. Motion
was seconded by Commissioner Puente.
Hearing no objections, it was so ordered.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Motion made by Commissioner McHenry to approve the agenda for July 15, 2014. Motion
was seconded by Commissioner Puente.

OLD: BUSINESS
A. Report on CTG Leadership Group
None.
B. Annual Presentation to City Council
Vice Chair Garcia reported that Chair Lehman is working on the report. All
Commissioners were asked to attend and wear their name badges on August 4th at 6:00
p.m.
C. Advertising for Fro-Yo Fever Fundraiser — Sunday, August 31, 2014
It was decided that Vice Chair Garcia would take the Letter to the Editor and Press
Release that Commissioner Berry wrote last year, update it and forward it to the Gilroy
Dispatch. Recreation Supervisor Mireles- Janisch stated that the City's Public
Information staff then forwarded them to the newspaper. Commissioner Berry also
suggested that if they passed the Release out to the different churches they might put it in
their bulletins.
D. Quarterly Report on Youth Scholarship Funds & Distribution (Apr, July, Oct, Jan)
Recreation Supervisor Judy Mireles- Janisch reported that the balance in the Youth
Scholarship Fund is approximately $50,000. This past quarter $6, 452.72 was given out
in scholarships.

PROGRAM UPDATES
Recreation (Recreation Supervisor Judy Mireles- Janisch): See attached report.
Operations (David Stubchaer, Senior Engineer & Operations Manager): See attached
report.
Mr. Stubchaer referred to the portion of his report that suggested using recycled water to
water the trees at Christmas Hill Park. He was told that Gilroy has the lowest salinity in
Santa Clara County. He will be looking into this and report back to the Commission.
One capital project is in progress, the mural restoration project and it is going well at San
Ysidro Park Handball courts
Commissioner Scheel asked about the walkway from Mantelli to Santa Teresa (weeds and litter).
She reported that as of this morning, it was not taken care of Mr. Stubchaer stated that staff will
be discussing. this with the City's landscape contractor as it is not acceptable.
Commissioner Puente reported that at 1311 3`d Street there is a speed limit sign that cannot be
seen due to overgrowth of the trees. Mr. Stubehaer will have it taken care of within a week.
Also, on the levee there is an abundance of puncture vine, a weed. It gives you a flat tire.
Commissioner Puente stated it needs to be taken out before someone gets injured. Mr. Stubchaer
will look into it.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Bicycle Pedestrian Commission
Commissioner Scheel reported that she attended the May 27th Bicycle Pedestrian Commission
meeting. She handed out the agenda for that meeting to each of the Commissioners.
Gang Task Force
None.

GPAC
Commissioner Scheel reported that GPAC met on April 16th, May 14th, May 28th (special
meeting) and June 21st (was a community meeting); the next meeting is August 13th at 6:30 p.m.
All the meetings are open to the public. She read the draft mission statement to the Commission.
They are also working on a draft of the guiding principles.

Youth Commission
None.
COAEMSSION PARK REPORTS & COMMENTS
Commissioner 1VIcHenry — He participated in the Special Friends Golf Tournament along with
Commissioner. Puente. It was a great event, as always.
Commissioner Puente = He stated that an excellent job was done by the staff at the Special
Friends Golf Tournament. Great steaks.
Commissioner Puente — volunteered at the Kids Tri and it was an excellent event. He also
attended the Disney Spectacular at Christmas Hill Park Amphitheater. Commissioner Puente
reported on San Ysidro Park — big tree fell and was taken care of; two (2) lights are out — one at
the children's corner and the other in the north corner by the creek. Also, some of the nearby
residents have been discussing that additional parking is needed for the park. In general,
Commissioner Puente is very pleased with the condition of the park.
Commissioner Scheel --- She attended the Senior Ball on April 19th; she and Commissioner Berry
worked at the Bike Station May 8th (sponsored by the Bicycle Pedestrian Commission). She
also attended the Party in the Park at San Ysidro Park on July 11th. She reported she saw the
bags that were distributed at that event being used at St. Joseph's Food Distribution. The dinner
at Party in the Park was great. The Kids Tri was fun, city staff did a great job.
Commissioner Berry — She is taking the water aerobics class. There was an emergency and staff
handled it superbly. Her granddaughter comes home exhausted every day from day camp, she
loves it. Commissioner Berry taught a class as a docent at the Gilroy Gardens Day Camp. She
also volunteered at the Special Friends Golf Tournament and Kids Tri - both were excellent.
Party in the Park — she took her granddaughter who had a great time.
STAFF_ COMMENTS
Maria De Leon informed the Commission that the last Party in the Park will be Friday, August
11th. The theme will be Community Resources.
The Commission was asked if they were agreeable to having a special meeting regarding the
Mataro Park design and name change. It was decided that it would be July 22, 2014 at 5:30 p.m.
Sondra Banks thanked Commissioners Berry, Scheel and Puente for working with her at the

Registration table for the Kids Tri. She also thanked Bernice Aguilera who worked with her as
well. She told them to save the date for the event next year.
ADJOURNMENT
Vice Chair Garcia adjourned the meeting at 6:43 p.m.
FUTURE MEETING
The next regular meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission will be held on Tuesday,
August 19, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. at Gilroy City Hall Council Chambers, 7351 Rosanna Street,
Gilroy, CA.
