Vince Bautista, Jr. Secretary ar Meeting Minutes Agenda Item Title: Fiscal Year 2024 and Fiscal Year 2025 Budget Requests Meeting Date: April 10, 2023 From: Vince Bautista Jr., Recreation Coordinator RECOMMENDATION The Youth Commission will motion and vote on a consensus budget request(s) for the next two-year budget cycle. BACKGROUND The City of Gilroy prepares it budgets on a two-year cycle. The City’s fiscal year begins on July 1st each year and ends June 30th of the following year. The City is currently in its second and final budget year from the previous budget cycle. As staff prepares the budget proposal, the City’s boards and commissions are being provided the opportunity to submit budget requests for consideration of inclusion in the proposed and potentially adopted City budget. The input could include funding for professional training, conferences, grants, or projects the board would like the City Council to consider. At the March meeting, the Commission discussed various options including developing a grant program for Gilroy-based, youth-focused nonprofit organizations. A committee was formed to work on the criteria. ANALYSIS The Commission is proposing a Grant Program that would distribute between $500- $1,000 to a youth-focused, nonprofit organization in Gilroy. The criteria would include a focus on proposed programs that promote community service projects such as a homework tutoring service, a citywide clean-up, or organizing a community event focused on youth and physical activities. Proposals must serve the residents of Gilroy. Funding would be provided to the grantee through a reimbursement process, following the event. The Committee recommends requesting $2,500 per fiscal year (FY24 and FY25), which could potentially fund up to three events annually per organization.
