Library Commission Regular Meeting Minutes

1. CALL TO ORDER
Meeting was called to order at 7:02 p.m.
2. SECRETARY'S REPORT
The Library Commission agenda was posted online on and posted in the City Hall kiosk
on February 11, 2023.
3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
3.1. November 9, 2022

6. INTRODUCTIONS
6.1. Harjot Sangha, Finance Director
Harjot Sangha introduced himself to the Commission.
7. NEW BUSINESS
7.1. Selection of Chair and Vice-Chair of Library Commission
Commissioner Kim nominated Chair Baxter to serve as Chair again. Baxter
nominated Kim to serve as Vice Chair, but Kim declined. Baxter nominated
Commissioner Nooshabadi to serve as Vice Chair and he accepted. Baxter will
serve as Chair and Nosabadi will serve as Vice Chair.
MOTION: Nominate Commissioner Baxter and Nooshabadi as Chair and Vice-
Chair of the Library Commission, respectively.

7.2. Library Commission Fiscal Year 2024 and Fiscal Year 2025 Budget
Requests
Sangha explained to the Commissions about the opportunity to provide input to
the upcoming two-year budget cycle. For example, the Commission could either
recommend a library-related program or training that requires funding or could
issue a letter of support for an existing service or program that is relevant to the
Commission. Input should be provided at the next Commission meeting.
7. LIBRARY REPORTS
7.1 Santa Clara County Library: Deputy County Librarian Stephen Fitzgerald
discussed the following during his report: Public Library Service’s star rating for the
Santa Clara County Library System; a Gilroy Librarian honored as a Top 10 County
employee; Silicon Valley Reads program; the adoption of the Library System’s
Strategic Plan, which includes a new vision and mission; Celebrating Black History
Month; the phased out OverDrive App; and staffing changes.
7.2 Gilroy Library: Gilroy Librarian Cassandra Wong covered the following during
her report: staffing changes at the Gilroy Library; a grant for a digital art program;
Black History Month; Resilient Families program; coding for girls and other library
programs; positive response from hosting the Dolores Huerta exhibit; Library
circulation data; and upcoming events.
8. STAFF COMMENTS: Henig explained potential opportunities for commission training as
well as an updated version of the City Board and Commission Manual, which will be
available upon Council approval. Henig and Harjot explained the purpose of Council
Correspondence.
9. FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS: Commissioners asked for a reminder about providing budget
suggestions at the April meeting.
10. ADJOURNMENT
Baxter adjourned the meeting at 7:54 p.m.
