8. LIBRARY REPORTS
8.1. Library Commission Fiscal Year 2024 and Fiscal Year 2025 Budget
Requests
Henig reviewed the guidelines for the Commission’s opportunity to provide input
for the upcoming two-year budget cycle. The Commission motioned to
recommend the following items:
• An annual ceremony to honor a Gilroy resident who has contributed to
furthering the issues of social justice and inclusivity within the community.
($4,000, $2,000 per fiscal year).
• A commissioner to participate in the annual California Library Association
conference in FY25 ($2,500).
If they were to have to choose one, the Commission would prefer to have
Council fund the ceremony.

8.2. Santa Clara County Library Report for March - April 2023 (report attached)
Santa Clara County Librarian Jennifer Weeks reported the following: April is
National Poetry Month; a financial literacy workshop that focuses on avoiding
scammers; and a joint powers meeting.
8.3. Gilroy Library Report
Gilroy Children’s librarian Marissa Jacobo reviewed her report and cited the
following: Gilroy’s library circulation numbers (i.e., how many borrowers there
were in 2023 and total number of circulation items).
She also discussed programs that occurred in March and April. Commissioner
Nooshabadi asked how the Library tallies the numbers for events. Jacobo
explained it’s usually counted by hand. She discussed upcoming events such as
the “Driving Smart” class and “Gearing up for Pet Chickens.” There was also a
question about computer classes, which the Library currently provides.
9. COMMISSION COMMENTS
Reddy inquired if there could be an item added for a future meeting about offering
academic-focused programs, such as recruiting a scholar to discuss an issue of the day.
She recommended reaching out to community members to serve as instructors. Chair
Baxter thought it was a great idea and requested that it be added to a future agenda. The
Library would be supportive of it. Henig will add it to the next meeting’s agenda.
