Subject: EXTERNAL - Santa Teresa Fire Station
Dear Gilroy City Council Members:
As a retired teacher, I have seen the importance of rapid emergency response for
children in distress. As a homeowner, I know how important it is to have a well staffed
fire station nearby. Imagine how concerned, I am, therefore, to learn that the new
Santa Teresa fire station is poorly and sometimes "non-existently" staffed at this point
and that City Council is considering actually not improving this situation.
My daughter and her family live in Glen Loma and she has an infant son that has
been diagnosed with epilepsy. She has had to call 911 seven times since March. One
of those times, it took the emergency crew 16 minutes to reach her house. My
grandson was seizing for eight of those minutes with no rescue medication available
to him because of his young age. This was and is horrifying! Brain damage happens
after continual seizing, especially in the very young. I got to her house before the
emergency crew and I live in the Sunrise area.
Gilroy City Council can do better than this! If you are going to continue building more
and more expensive homes in the south end of this town, the very least you can do is
offer adequate emergency services. No money for emergency services? Then stop
building homes and putting those families at risk!
I urge the City Council to adequately and reliably staff the Santa Teresa Fire Station
