Executive Summary Report will be presented by Bicycle and Pedestrian Commission Chair Zachary Hilton. The League of American Bicyclists has designated Gilroy as a Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) at the Bronze level. This award is presented only to communities with strong commitments to bicycling. The Bronze designation is valid for four years and will be up for renewal in 2022.The BFC program is revolutionizing the way communities evaluate their quality of life, sustainability, and accessibility, while allowing them to benchmark progress toward improving their bicycle-friendliness. There are currently 464 BFCs in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Other Santa Clara County cities that received the award include Cupertino, Los Altos, Palo Alto, Santa Clara, and Sunnyvale. Attachments: 1. BFC_Fall_2018_ReportCard_Gilroy_CA 9.A Packet Pg. 10 100%35% »Ensure that your community follows a bicycle facility selection criteria that increases separation and protection of bicyclists based on levels of motor vehicle speed and volume. »Provide education to law enforcement officers on bicycle safety and traffic laws as they apply to bicyclists and motorists and bicycling skills. Ensure that law enforcement officers who are not certified or trained as bicycle patrol officers nevertheless have basic training or experience with bicycling in your community in order to foster positive interactions between bicyclists and police officers. »Adopt a comprehensive road safety plan or a Vision Zero policy to create engineering, education, and enforcement strategies to reduce traffic crashes and deaths for all road users, including bicyclists and pedestrians. Road diets, lane diets, and traffic calming treatments are important engineering components for addressing safety. »Appoint a staff member as Bicycle & Pedestrian Coordinator or create a new full-time or part-time position. »Begin the process of creating a new Bicycle Master Plan or updating your 2002 bike plan. Regularly updating your bicycle plan is key to improving conditions for bicycling, adhering to evolving best practices and national standards, and institutionalizing processes for continual evaluation and improvement. »Congratulations on the planned launch of a bike share program in December 2018! Bike sharing is a convenient, cost effective, and healthy way of encouraging locals and visitors to make short trips by bike, make bicycling more accessible to all, and to bridge the "last mile" between public transit and destinations.
