ORDINANCE NO.
332.
AN ORDINANCE A~ENDING SECTION 194 OF THE MUNIUIPAL
CODE OF THE CITY OF GILROY, RELATIVE TO SIGNS OVER STREETS
AND SIDEWALKS.
,. The Mayor and Common Council of the city of Gilroy do
ordain as follows:
Section 1. That Section 194 of the Municipal Code of
the City of Gilroy be and the same is hereby amended to read as
follows:

No person, firm or corporation owning or
occupying any building or p~emises fronting upon any public
Street shall swing, suspend or maintain ove~ the streets or
sidewalk in front of such building or premises, any sign or ad-
vertisement which does not conform to the regulations herein-
after provided. Before constructing any sign over any public
street or sidewalk a permit so to do must be secured from the
Fire Committee of the Common Council, of the City of Gilroy.
All signs must be permanently and firmly fastened and
secured to the wall of the building in front of which such sign
is to be maintained.
No sign or advertisement shall be suspended or swung from
above, and no sign, except an electric sign as hereinafter pro-
vided, shall be permitted to extend more than two feet over the
inside line of the sideWalk.
An electric sign withinuthe meaning of this ordinance is 0 e
so equipped and illuminated with electric light as to throw,loff
light when lighted. A sign which reflects light from an out-
side source# or upon which light from an outside SOurce is
directed to show the letters or characters on the sign, is not
an electric sign within the meaning of this ordinance.

Electric signs must be constructed in every respect in
accordance with the requirements of the regulations of the In-
dustrial Accident Commission of the state of California now in
force or which may hereafter be enacted. Electric signs and
their supports must be made entirely of metal and other non-
combustible and non-corrosive materials. Elect~ic signs must
be permanently and firmly fastened and secured to the walls of
the building in front of which such sign is maintained.
Electric signs shall be at least ten feet above the sidewalk
and shall not extend beyond one foot inside the curb line. The
exposed area of both sides of electric signs which project more
than five feet over the sidewalk shall not exceed fifty square
teet, and such signs must be provided with a hing~ near the wal
and so equipped with wire, rope or cord, and pulley that the
sign may be swung back parallel to and against the front wall
of the building to which it is att~ched during the daytime and
in time of high winds and storms. Electric signs which extend
more than five feet over the street or sidewalk must be swung
parallel to and against. the front wall to whcih it is attached
between the hours of 8 o'clock A. M. and 5 o'clock P. M.
Section 2. All ordinances and parts of ordinances in con-
flict herewith are hereby repealed.
Section 3. Any person violating or wilfully not complying
with any provision of this ordinance is guilty of a misdemeanor
and shall upon conviction thereof be punished by a fine not
exceeding one hundred dollars or by imprisonment in the city
prison not exceeding thirty days, or by both such fine and
imprisonment.
Section 4. This ordinance shall take effect and be in
force from and after its passage and approval.
