WHEREAS, the State Highway Commission of the State of
California has heretofore declared its intention of constructing
a Freeway from the end of the BayShore Highway, as it now exists
in the vicinity of the Ford Road, through the South Santa Clara
Vall., to connect onto the present Freeway South of the City of
Gilroy near what is known as Thomas Lane; and,
WHEREAS, there has been considerable agitation and much
dissension in selecting the rOute which the State Freeway shall follow
between the said points; and,
WHEREAS, three routes have been proposed for the said Free-
way; one to extend along the Eastern foothills; one known as the
Central Valley route to run East of the Southern Pacific Railroad
traeks near the City of Morgan Hill and near the Easterly City Limits
of the City of Gilroy by the most direct route; and, the other, des1ana-
ted as a Westerly Route, to extend West of the City of Gilroy and
Morgan Hill and run near the Oarnadero Creek and the West foothills;
and,
WHEREAS, the Common Council of the City of Gilroy, at public
meetings, has heard arguments presented for the various routes and has
definitely concluded that the route first proposed by the Commission,
designated as the Central Valley Route, above mentioned, is the most
favorable and most preferable of the three routes presented, am will
be most advantageous to the South Santa Clara Valley area and the said
Common Council desires to go on record favoring said route.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Common Council of
the City of Gilroy, after haVing thoroughly considered the three routes
above proposed, does hereby endorse the said Central Valley Route and
does emphatically oppose the said so-called Western Route and does here-
by recommend to the Board of Supervisors of Santa Clara County, to the

Sta te Highway Commission and to all other public bodies and to all
other groups having anything to do with or interested in the selection
of the route, that the said Central Valley Route ab~e described,
be the route of the proposed Freeway, and we do further recanmend
that the Freeway be constructed on such said route, without any
further delay.
BE IT FURmER RESOLVED THAT copies of this resolution
duly certified by the City Clerk of the City of Gilroy, be forwarded
to the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors for San ta Clara County and to
the State Highway Commission of the State of Caifornia.
PASSED AND ADOPTED BY THE FOLLOWING VOTE OF THE COMMON
COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY, lliIS 18th DAY OF AUGUST, 1958.
