Resolution 1980- 12 . . RESOLUTION NO. 80 - 12 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY DECLARING eOMMUNITY COLLEGE l~EK. WHEREAS, California's 107 community colleges are dedicated to the needs of their local citizens and oriented to local neighborhoods; and WHEP~AS, Ca1ifonia's community colleges stress local control, and "open door" policy of equal access to all persons, tuition-free education, opportunities for lifelong learning through a wide spec- trum of programs and courses; and ~~EREAS, California's community colleges offer a total of 6,500 programs for citizens (1) planning to transfer to four-year colleges or universities; (2) seeking skills for initial employment or retraining; (3) desiring developmental education; and (4) seeking personal growth; and WHEREAS, California's community colleges have taken a leader- ship role in developing programs for students with special needs, such as the disadvantaged, reentering men and women, the handicapped, student parents, members of ethnic minorities, senior citizens, work- ing students, and those needing developmental education; and WHEREAS, California's community colleges have met those spe- cia1 needs by providing child development centers; learning resource centers; advisors and services for the handicapped; satellite campus centers throughout the community; weekend, twilight and television courses to meet the needs of the working student; and extensive com- munity service programs to encourage personal growth and enrichment; and lNHEREAS, California's community colleges believe in the impor- tance of the unique classroom experience between student and teacher, RESOLUTION NO. 80-12 -1- . . the preservation of academic freedom and the fostering of staff excellence; and WHEREAS, California's community colleges have had a posi- tive impact on the state's economy by producing graduates with sa1- able skills who then become productive taxpayers, as well as through the economic growth generated through employee salaries and purchase of goods and services; and WHEREAS, California's community colleges are dedicated to the principle that society will benefit when all persons within it have an opportunity for lifetime learning and improved quality of life; NOW, THEREFORE, LET IT BE RESOLVED, that the Gilroy City Council does hereby declare the week of February 17-23, 1980 as, COMMUNITY COLLEGE l{EEK in Gilroy, with the theme of "CALIFORNIA'S COMMUNITY COLLEGES... BY THE PEOPLE. . . FOR THE PEOPLE", and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Gilroy City Council urges the citizens, students and legislators in Gilroy to strongly sup- port and take advantage of the outstanding local programs and ser- vices offered by the Gavi1an Joint Community College District.
