RESOLUTION NO. 80 - 99
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY DECLARING
CANCER EDUCATION WEEK AND SMOKEOUT DAY
~IEREAS, cigarette smoking is the number one preventable
cause of death in the nation; and
WHEREAS, of the 53 million American smokers, nearly 8
million are young people between the ages of 12 and 20; and
WHEREAS, the age range from 12 to 18 is the only cate-
gory where smoking among females exceeds the rate of smoking
among males; and
WHEREAS, from 1969 to 1975, cigarette smoking among teen-
age girls increased at the rate of 23 percent;
WHEREAS, this increase in the numbers of intensity of
cigarette smoking among young women and teenage girls has occur-
red at a time when these young people are intellectually fully
aware of the hazards of smoking; and
WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society has designated
November 17th through the 21st, 1980 as
"CANCER EDUCATION WEEK"; and
WHEREAS, the major event of that week is the GREAT AMERI-
CAN SMOKEOUT (GAS) DAY on
November 20, 1980
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of
the City of Gilroy does hereby urge
THE CITIZENS OF THE CITY OF GILROY
to quit smoking, and ask others to quit smoking, not only on
