RESOLUTION NO. l36l
A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY HONORING
THE HEROIC ACTIONS OF MISS SUSAN HANSCH AND MR. BRUCE HAGEN.
WHEREAS~ Miss Hansch a seventeen (l7) year old Gilroy High School
Student and part time Life Guard for the City Recreation Department~ at ap-
proximately 3:30 p.m. on Friday~ May 30~ 1969~ Memorial Day~ sighted thirteen
(l3) year old Carlos Valdez~ lying motionless and unconscious in the Gilroy
High School Swimming Pool; and
WHEREAS~ Miss Hansch~ although small in physical stature~ but a de-
termined and expert swimmer~ immediately rescued Carlos from the water; and
WHEREAS~ immediately following Miss Hansch's action~ Bruce Hagen~ a
sixteen (l6) year old Gilroy High School student~ applied mouth to mouth
resuscitation to Carlos; and
WHEREAS~ as the result of their combined efforts~ team work and dedi-
cation to their fellowman~ these two teenagers did revive Carlos and return
him from near death;
NOW~ THEREFORE~ BE IT RESOLVED by the Gilroy City Council that they do
hereby honor these heroic actions by Miss Susan Hansch and Mr. Bruce Hagen; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED~ that it is this Council's opinion that these
two young people do more typically represent the majority of the youth of our
great Nation than do those negative individuals~ who unfortunately are accorded
so much national notariety; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED~ that we extend our best wishes to Susan and
Bruce for every future success~ a productive and a rewarding life.
