RESOLUTION NO. 1371
A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY HONORING
THE HEROIC ACTIONS OF MR. CLARENCE POTTER.
WHEREAS, Mr. Potter, on the morning of July 6, 1969, noticed smoke coming
from an adjacent house trailer. He rushed to the trailer and seeing it was on
fire, attempted to arouse the occupants. Being unable to do so, he broke the
front trailer door open and saw two small children run to the back of the trailer.
At that time, the entire front end of the trailer was on fire. Mr. Potter then
ran out and around to the rear door of the trailer which was also locked. He
broke open this second door, awakened the sleeping parents, and aided them and
their two children in evacuating from the trailer. The trailer was within moments
completely engulfed in flames; and
WHEREAS, the quick thinking and determined actions of Mr. Potter undoubtedly
saved this family of four from perishing in this fire; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Potter acted with complete disregard for his own safety and
was intent upon going to the aide of, and the safety of, his neighbors; and
WHEREAS, such heroic actions truely represent an ideal that all dedicated
Americans a~pire to;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Gilroy City Council that they do
hereby take the opportunity, in the name of all Gilroy residents, to honor Mr.
Clarence Potter for his heroic actions and the type of character they represent; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we extend our best wishes to Mr. Potter and
his family for every future success and a long and rewarding life.
