RESOLUTION NO. 1388
RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY
OPPOSING CONSTRUCTION OF A DAM ON UVAS CREEK
NEAR ITS INTERSECTION WITH STATE HIGHWAY 152
WEST OF GILROY
WHEREAS, the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers has previously
proposed construction of a large flood control dam on Uvas
Creek west of Gilroy which would result in the permanent
destruction of hundreds of acres of the most valuable and
scenic land in the Gilroy areas, and
WHEREAS, this Council has previously opposed such a
project on the basis that the irreparable damage caused by
such a project would far outweigh any possible benefits, and
WHEREAS, the Corps of Engineers has again scheduled
hearings for further consideration of such a project,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF GILROY that it does unanimously oppose the contruction
of any large dam on the Uvas Creek west of Gilroy.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Mayor of the City of
Gilroy be the official spokesman of the City and Council to
voice its opposition to said project at all hearings where
such project is considered, and to suggest as possible
alternatives for flood control:
1. Increasing the capacity of the existing Uvas
Dam and resevoir.
2. Increasing the capacity of the existing
Chesbro Dam and resevoir, now contemplated under a
Federal 566 program.
3. Construction of smaller dams and resevoirs to
impound the flood water of the Little Arthur Creek and
Bodfish Creek near their source.
4. Construction of a dam in Chittenden Pass.
5. Smaller check dams at suitable points along
the full length of Uvas Creek.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be
delivered to the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers as an official
statement of the opposition of the City to the proposed
proj ec t.
