RESOLUTION NO. 1265
RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GILROY
APPROVING A PLAN FOR CONSOLIDATION OF THE GILROY
CITY LIBRARY WITH THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY LIBRARY
WHEREAS, after due study the Library and Culture Commission
has by resolution recommended to this Council that a plan be
approved for the consolidation of the Gilroy City Library with
the Santa Clara County Library so as to provide through revenue
bonds a new and more adequate library building and facility in
the City of Gilroy together with increased library services, and
WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Gilroy has invited
public comment of all interested citizens at its regular meeting
at 8:00 porn. on June 17, 1968, at the Council Chambers in the
City of Gilroy, and
WHEREAS, said public discussion has been held and the
Council has duly considered the recommendation of the Library
and Culture Commission and the comments of interested citizens
thereon,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City
of Gilroy finds the proposed plan to be a feasible means of
providing new library facilities and increased library service
to the community at minimum cost to the taxpayer, and therefore
approves the plan for consolidating the Gilroy City Library
with the Santa Clara County Library on the following terms and
conditions:
10 Name and sign designation shall continue to be the
"Gilroy Public Library" with the County seal added.
2. Persons emplo~ed by the City of Gilroy performing a
function which is to be assumed by the County and who have

previously qualified for their City positions through a
merit or civil service system shall be eligible to transfer
without examination to County employment.
The former City employees continuing with the County shall
be given credit for accrued, uncompensated vacation and sick
lease with the City. Upon transfer to a classification
comparable to that formerly held with the City, such
employees shall be employed without any decrease in salary.
Salary increases may thereafter be granted in accordance
with the County Salary Ordinance.
3. The present library hours would be retained with
necessary adjustments to be made in accordance with use.
4. A lease agreement between the County Board of Super-
visors and the City Council of Gilroy will be executed by
July 30, 1968, which will provide for a City of Gilroy Bond
Election for a library building leased to the County of Santa
Clara with the County Library paying for all costs through
rent in addition to providing library service.
5. The present County Library tax of 2l~ per $100 assessed
valuation shall prevail, and thereafter, the tax rate will be
in accordance with the County Library tax rate set by the
Board of Supervisors.
6. The County Library shall operate the Library in Gilroy
in the present building at no rent, in exchange for the funding
of the Gilroy Museum which is considered equal, in accordance
with the policies set forth by the Board of Supervisors.
7. The County Librarian shall work closely with the Gilroy
Library and Culture Commission as officially appointed by the
Gilroy City Council.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
transmitted to the Board of Supervisors of Santa Clara County,
and to the County Library Commission.
